Abstract: An apparatus for tensioning the cable or bail of a ski-touring binding, a tensioning lever for such apparatus, and a replacement component for the lever are provided. The apparatus provides different tension for walking and for skiing. The lever includes a handle and a pivot for rotational engagement of the lever on the cable or bail. The pivot is located between the handle and a plurality of boot heel holders. The holders are configured such that at least one holder will contact the ski boot heel at a different distance relative to the pivot than another of the holders. The replacement component is removably fixed to the lever and is configured to provide a heel holder surface and to retain a bail or cable in rotational engagement with the lever.

Abstract: A Nordic ski boot support and attachment mechanism (100) having a toe piece 102 that slidably engages a ski 90, a lever (106) that is pivotably attached to the toe piece, a rigid forefoot support 110 that is fixedly attached to the lever, a heel support (120) that is pivotably attached to the forefoot support, and an ankle support (130) that is pivotably attached to the heel support. The lever engages the toe piece at the left and right side, including a moment arm therebetween that is at least one half inch long. The lever may include a recess 107 that engages a rearward projection on the toe piece. A heel piece (140) is also slidably disposed on the ski providing a second projection (141). The heel support includes an engagement member (122) that engages the second projection when the lever is in the down position.

Abstract: A ski binding of the cross-country type in which a ski boot's heel may be elevated with respect to the ski's top surface while in the act of skiing. The binding includes a toe piece associated with a heel retainer through a spring-biased linkage. A linkage typically includes a pre-loaded compression spring mounted external to a core element. A preferred linkage includes a plurality of rigid link elements defining plurality of intermediate pivot axes between an anchor and the heel retainer. Certain preferred linkage systems permit unfettered boot flexion, but transversely maintain the heel retainer in a zone over the ski to facilitate step-in engagement. Desirably, the core is adjustable along the linkage, to change a spacing between the toe piece and heel retainer independent of spring pre-load. Preferred embodiments of the binding a rear frame adapted to permit step-in engagement of a ski boot. Certain frames may carry a televator. A frame may function as a rear shim to permit adjusting a binding to fit boots of different sizes without necessitating adjustment of the position of a rear shim installed on a ski.

Abstract: A releasable riser plate assembly is provided for use with a telemark binding. The assembly is mounted to a ski. The assembly includes a base plate interconnecting a front and rear housing, and a release plate mounted over the base plate. Force transmitting members are integrated in the housings to hold the release plate. A toe adapter of the telemark binding is mounted on the release plate. The toe of a ski boot is secured in the toe adapter. Adequate force generated by the boot in either a lateral direction or vertical direction results in disengagement of the release plate from the base plate and housings. Accordingly, the boot separates from the ski. The assembly incorporates a ski brake. The ski brake activates upon separation of the release plate. The release plate is reattached by a step-in motion wherein a front portion of the release plate is positioned under a lip of the front housing, and then the heel of the boot is pressed down against the ski to seat a rear portion of the release plate against the base plate and rear housing.

Abstract: The present invention relates to ski bindings. One embodiment of the present invention relates to a releasable heel retention system, which includes a base, a climbing bar, a climbing bar interface member, and a heel throw. The base is coupled to a ski or snow sport device in a fixed manner. The climbing bar is rotatably coupled to the base to provide an extended and retracted position. The climbing bar interface member is configured to bear against the climbing bar in some manner when the heel is retained. In one embodiment, the climbing bar interface member is rotatably coupled to the climbing bar. Alternatively, the climbing bar interface member may be shaped to selectively hook under the climbing bar when the heel is retained. The heel throw is a lever type releasable coupler for coupling to the heel region of a boot. The heel throw is directly coupled to the climbing bar interface member. In one embodiment, the heel throw and climbing bar interface member are rotatably coupled to the climbing bar. Alternatively, the heel throw and climbing bar interface member may be coupled to a cable. The releasable heel retention system of the present invention may be completely independent of any of binding systems or used in conjunction with an existing binding system to provide an improved multi-use binding.
