A communication apparatus, which has a normal power consumption mode and a power saving mode lower in power consumption than in the normal power consumption mode and which is connected to a network via a network interface device, communicates with a device on the network via the network interface device. The communication apparatus acquires capability information indicating a communication capability of the device, and based on acquired capability information, determines a communication mode to be used when the network interface device communicates with the device under a condition that the communication apparatus has shifted to the power saving mode, and when the communication apparatus shifts from the normal power consumption mode to the power saving mode, sets the determined communication mode as a communication mode to be used when the network interface device communicates with the external device.

The communication control unit controls the data communication unit to start transmitting the image data to a first transmitting destination at a timing when reading of the document image by the image reader starts, when a plurality of transmitting destinations are registered.

At the same time, the original information is transmitted in accordance with the transmission mode of its own apparatus, the encoding method determined based on the reception capability of a facsimile apparatus at a reception destination, and the receiving-side output original size and resolution.

A communication circuit controls the determination of a communication mode to determine a communication mode with a destination station and controls a reception operation and a transmission operation. When the speed of communication between the remote device and machine is not urgent, a connectionless mode of communication may be used. The form of connectionless communication is an electronic mail message transmitted over the Internet. However, when a condition needs urgent action, a direct connection is used for communication such as communication via a telephone or ISDN line. The information obtained from the machine is stored in one or more data bases within a company and information of the machine is shared between a service department, engineering and design department, manufacturing department, and marketing department. As communication over the Internet via electronic mail is not secure, the connectionless-mode messages transmitted using Internet electronic mail are encrypted.
