Abstract: Rinsing water from the glass industry which contains H2SO4, HF, As and/or Sb as well as possibly Pb is conducted through an anion exchanger of type I or II where the As- and Sb-fluoride complex ions are removed in a first stage followed by a second treatment with Ca(OH)2 to ppte. out arsenates and antimonates. Pref. the first treatment is carried out at a water pH of 0-2. The exchange is a macro-porous anion exchange contg. chloride or hydroxyl ions. USE/ADVANTAGE - Cleaning the waste water from glass melting, mechanical grinding and acid polishing. The complex ions are removed before the H2SO4.

Abstract: A combined membrane/sorption process is used to selectively remove ions from liquid streams. As an example, nitrate ions can be more effectively removed from an aqueous stream also containing sulfate ions. Sulfate ions normally are not needed or desired to be removed from drinking water, but are typically sorbed by the available ion exchange resins and result in inefficient use of the ion exchange capacity. The disclosed process and apparatus use an ion selective membrane (10) to first remove the sulfate ions (12) from the stream and then remove the nitrate ions by ion exchange (20).

Abstract: Continuous removal of S-containing anions from alkaline solutions used washing gases Sulphite, sulphate, thiosulphate and thiocyanate anions are removed from alkaline solution used for removing H2S or COS from gas mixture or CO2 from S-containing gases by passing the spent alkaline solution through an anion exchanger. This process is much more convenient than the usual distillation under vacuum; it is esp. suitable for the regeneration of alkanolamine solution, or N-methylpyrrolidone.

Abstract: The carboxyl cation is a mixed polymer with acrylic acid and/or methacrylic acid and divinyl benzene, the anion is a copolymer of styrene and divinyl benzene, with trimethylammonium ion and dimethylethanol ammonium group. To regenerate the cations a weak acid is used, the corresponding solution of the salt will regenerate the anions. The two exchange components are in the ratio of 1:10 or 10:1, and the anion component must have macroporosity as well as being strongly basic.

Abstract: 1,193,205. Removal of Pd compounds from aq. glyoxal solutions. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. 4 Oct., 1967 [5 Oct., 1966], No. 45187/67. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C1] Glyoxal, obtained by the oxidation of ethylene using nitric acid in the presence of palladium compounds, is purified by removal of the Pd compounds using an anion exchange resin. It is preferable to remove other organic impurities which boil below 100‹ C. prior to treatment with the anion exchange resin. The exchange resin preferably has quaternary ammonium groups and is intimately mixed with the aqueous solution by passing the solution down a column of resin having a particle size of from 0À1 to 1 mm. at a temperature between 0‹ C. and 80‹ C., preferably room temperature. The column may be regenerated with nitric acid and the resulting Pd-containing nitric acid may be reused in the oxidation.

Abstract: 1,185,609. Ion-exchange; water treatment, FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 30 Sept., 1968 [14 Oct., 1967], No. 46279/68. Heading BIJ. Water is treated by passage through a layer bed comprising a weakly basic anion exchanger and a strongly basic anion exchanger in the direction from weakly basic to strongly basic exchanger, regeneration being carried out in counter-current from the strongly basic to the weakly basic exchanger after the exchanger has been charged. Preferably the weakly basic anion exchanger has a spongelike structure and a specific gravity of from 1.01 to 1.1 and the strongly basic anion exchanger has either a sponge like (macroporous) or gel-like structure and a specific gravity of from 1.01 to 1.2.
