PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide ophthalmic compositions which are suitable for use as artificial tear products or as vehicles for ophthalmic drugs.SOLUTION: There are provided ophthalmic compositions suitable for use as artificial tears or as vehicles for ophthalmic drugs. The compositions contain a combination of two polymers that have a synergistic effect on viscosity. The ophthalmic compositions contain combinations of two polymers having a synergistic effect on viscosity. The combination is one of the following: hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and guar gum; hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and a carboxyvinyl polymer; a carboxyvinyl polymer and guar gum; hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and hydroxyethylcellulose; hyaluronic acid and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose; hyaluronic acid and a carboxyvinyl polymer; and hyaluronic acid and guar gum. If the compositions contain carboxyvinyl polymers, the compositions do not contain sodium chloride or boric acid.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control display positioning system, in which a control display is adjusted to a best-viewed position by medical professionals, a mechanical stress on an electrical cable for supplying electric signals to the control display is reduced, the control display can be moved in a wide range, and the position of the display can be retained and used with part of medical/surgical instruments, when the system is manually repositioned.SOLUTION: The control display positioning system 10 includes three vertically oriented hinges 30, 50, 70 and a horizontally oriented hinge 20 attached to the back of the control display. Two arms 40, 60 are used to connect the three vertically oriented hinges one to another. In each vertically oriented hinge is a central space for the passage of electrical cables therethrough. Moreover, in each vertically oriented hinge is a washer stack that provides necessary friction forces for the control display positioning system to remain in a selected position after being repositioned by a user.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable-angle, wide-angle illuminator.SOLUTION: A small-gauge, surgical variable-angle illuminator comprises: a light source for providing a light beam; an optical cable, optically coupled to the light source for receiving and transmitting the light beam; a handpiece, operably coupled to the optical cable; an optical fiber, operably coupled to the handpiece, wherein the optical fiber is optically coupled to the optical cable to receive and transmit the light beam; an optical assembly, coupled to a distal end of the optical fiber, for receiving the light beam and providing the light beam to illuminate a field; and a cannula, operably coupled to the handpiece and optical assembly, for housing and directing the optical assembly to an area, such as a surgical site. The optical assembly can comprise, for example, a polymer-dispersed-liquid-crystal ("PDLC") diffuser optically coupled to an optical needle or a nested compound parabolic concentrator ("CPC") cone.
Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and method for identifying a component, such as an optical probe or pneumatic scissors, of an ophthalmic surgical device.SOLUTION: The component of the surgical device includes an identifier, such as an RFID tag 102. Data 104 from the RFID tag is transmitted to a RFID reader 112 of the device. A controller 115 determines whether the component corresponding to the received data can be used with the surgical device based on criteria, such as whether the received data is an authorized code that matches data stored in memory 114 or whether the received data solves or satisfies an algorithm. The authorized codes are selected from a larger set of available codes. The controller enables or disables the operation of the device with the component based on whether the criteria is satisfied, the number of uses of the component, an amount of time that has passed since the component has been used, or a geographic location.
Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide 5,6,7-Trihydroxyheptanoic acid and analogs.SOLUTION: The method for using the 5,6,7-Trihydroxyheptanoic acid and the analogs and an ophthalmic composition containing the same is disclosed. The composition is useful especially for a person suffering from retinopathia diabetica, age-related macular degeneration, chronic rheumatoid arthritis, posterior segment eye disease or disease characterized in cell proliferation and angioplasty such as restenosis of a coronary artery after balloon angioplasty and cancer.
Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To ergonomiclly improve a footswitch to be adapted to a variety of users regarding the footswitch used for controlling a microsurgical console.SOLUTION: This surgical footswitch includes a base; a treadle pivotally and rotatably mounted to the base; and a pair of switches mounted to the treadle so that rotation or counter-rotation of the treadle operates the switches.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a customized IOL to address higher order refractive errors or changes to the cornea as a result of prior corneal refractive surgery. SOLUTION: A method of manufacturing an intraocular lens customized to provide optimum vision for an eye with prior corneal refractive surgery. Such a custom manufactured IOL addresses not only optical correction requirements as currently met by spherical or toric-shaped IOLs, but corrects higher order optical aberrations using needed optimum customized shapes. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide foldable ophthalmic and otorhinolaryngological device materials. SOLUTION: Soft, high refractive index, acrylic materials having an elongation of at least 150% are disclosed. These materials, especially useful as intraocular lens materials, contain an aryl acrylic hydrophobic monomer as the single principal device-forming monomer. In addition to their use as intraocular lens materials, the present materials are also suitable for use in other ophthalmic or otorhinolaryngological devices, such as contact lenses, keratoprostheses, corneal inlays or rings, and otological ventilation tubes and nasal implants.
