Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multiple drive library computer system in which a normal drive is accessible even during the repair of a failed drive.
SOLUTION: A library controller 36 and a repeater 38 are connected to a primary I/O bus. Drives housed in housings 20 to 28 are connected to respective secondary I/O buses pigtailed via PC boards 32 and 34 to the primary I/O bus. Data is transferred via the primary and secondary I/O buses. Once the failure of a drive is detected, the controller rejects only the access to a failed drive and disables power to the failed drive. In this situation, a secondary I/O bus cable, a power cable, and the like can be disconnected from the PC boards, and the failed drive can be detached using its handle.
