Abstract: In a communications system having incoming communications signals and outgoing communications signals the outgoing communications signals may undesirably include an echo signal derived from the incoming communications signals. Accordingly, echo cancellation techniques may be applied in the communications system, including generating weighting filter coefficients based on linear prodictive coding coefficients calculated from a block comprising a plurality of sequential samples of the incoming communications signals. The incoming communications signals are filtered through a weighting filter utilising the weighting filter coefficients to produce a weighted incoming communications signals. Estimated echo signals are generated by filtering the incoming communications signals through an adaptive transversal filter, the adaptive transversal filter using adaptive filter coefficients. Then, the estimated echo signals can be subtracted from the outgoing communications signals to produce error signals. Advantageously, the adaptive filter coefficients are determined for each sample in said block on the basis of the weighted incoming communications signals and the error signals.

Abstract: The present invention addresses concerns of reproducing stereo sounds with up to 5.1 speaker systems. It also addresses the issue of scalability in terms of computation and memory usage. The present invention adopts multi-band processing to allow different frequency bands to be steered separately. This advantageously achieves better channel separation when there are more than one dominant signal at any time. As the number of frequency bands increases, the ambiguity of decoding is reduced as the chances of the dominant band falling into the different frequency bands increases. The issues of multiple dominant signals is further decreased by introducing slow decay of surround signals when there is a dominant center signal and vice versa. This is based on the assumption that not all dominant signals are active at all times.

Abstract: The quality of music output from audio systems is improved by simulating the effect of low frequency signals in the human ear. This thus allows listeners to perceive the lower frequency signals, even though the speakers may be incapable of providing such low frequency outputs. Method and systems provided for processing enhancing bass effect in audio signals. Said method and systems result in the bass enhancement being computationally less intensive. The bass effect enhancement techniques described are based on the response of sine and cosine transfer functions and on the directional independence of low frequency components. The human ear is unable to resolve directions from low frequency components. The bass effect enhancement technique alternatively is based on response of an exponential transfer function.

Abstract: A method of selecting a motion vector for use in a motion estimation system is disclosed. The motion vector defines movement of a block of pixels between a search window and a reference frame. The method includes the steps of scanning a search window in a fixed order for a suitable match with an area of the reference frame such that each search position within a current row or column of the window is one pixel away from a previous search position, defining a preferred point in the search window, calculating a primary norm function with reference to the preferred point for a given position in each row or column, calculating a norm function for each search position based on a linear increment of the primary norm function for the respective row or column, calculating an Absolute Error (AE) for each search position, based on a difference between a given property of the search position and a position in the reference window, and selecting a motion vector, the displacement of the motion vector being defined in terms of the search position having the smallest AE and the smallest norm function. Apparatus for performing the method is also disclosed.
