Abstract:
In a method of locating the position of a fault (F) occurring in an electric power transmission system an indication of the position of the fault with respect to a monitoring point (A) is obtained from the time taken (TRW2-TFW1) for a transient component of fault signal to travel from the monitoring point to the fault and back to the monitoring point after reflection at the fault. Apparatus for carrying out the method is also described.
Abstract:
A cathodoluminescent lamp for use for general lighting service includes an anode constituted by an electrically conducting coating, which may be partly internally reflective, on the interior surface of the bulb wall, a phosphor coating over the whole of the bulb wall interior, a dome-shaped metal mesh grid located near the junction of the bulb with the envelope neck and supported on a hollow metal cylinder, and an electron emissive cathode mounted within the grid/cylin- der assembly. The cathode may be a "wreath" filament or indirectly heated disc located near the grid, or a linearfilament located near the open end of the cylinder remote from the grid. In the latter case a metal disc, connected to the negative lead to the cathode, is located near the open end of the cylinder, to repel electrons emerging therefrom. A circuit, which may be incorporated in the lampholder, converts the supply to unidirectional operating voltages applied to the anode, grid and cathode.
Abstract:
A driving circuit for a power transistor switch In which a feedback transformer (32) between the collector path of the power transistor (21) and that of the drivor transistor (22) is used to provide a current drive to the power transistor that is proportional to the load curtent, and in which reverse cur. rant drive, also proportional to the load current is applied by way of a third winding 36 on the transformer to the emitter- base circuit of the power transistor (21) to decrease the switching-off time of that transisator.
Abstract:
A carrier-domain magnetometer (20) incorporating compensation for changes in its domain rotation fre- quency/magnetic flux density characteristic due to changes in operating conditions, e.g. electric bias and/or ambient temperature conditions, and/or dueto ageing, compensation being obtained by providing means (24 to 28) for monitoring the ratio (F-F o )/F o where is the domain rotation frequency when both a magnetic field biassing the magnetometer onto the linear part of its frequency/flux characteristic and a magnetic field to be sensed are applied, and F o is the domain rotation frequency when the biassing field only is applied.
Abstract:
An ultrasonic imaging system utilising a multi-element ultrasonic transducer array for transmission and reception of ultrasonic signals wherein a different number of elements (L) is used in reception compared to transmission so as to reduce sidelobes in the resultant ultrasonic beam pattern. The elements may also be focussed to a different focal length in reception compared to transmission so as to obtain increased depth of field.
Abstract:
A fault warning arrangement for use in an electric power system, wherein the system includes warning means (10,11) for producing a first signal when the value of the leakage current in an insulator arrangement (5, 6), e.g. supporting a power line (3), of the system exceeds a first threshold value. The warning means may be arranged to detect the passing of threshold values by values of insulator leakage current by detecting the passing of threshold values by values of total insulator currents.
Abstract:
A synchronous detector circuit arrangement (30) is provided for detecting a signal of interest in an input signal, in which the input signal comprises a signal at a selected frequency which is modulated by the signal of interest and by an unwanted signal. The circuit arrangement comprises signal combining means (33) for combining the input signal with a correction signal (34); a synchronous detector (14) connected to the output of the signal combining means and operated at the selected frequency for detecting the signal of interest; and means (40, 43, 44) for generating the correction signal such that in operation the correction signal is a signal at the selected frequency, is in antiphase with the input signal and has an amplitude which is selected such as to at least partially cancel the unwanted signal.

Abstract:
Apparatus is provided for use with a commodity consumption meter (2), of a type having a sealed housing (3, 4, 6) and including a rotating component (14) whose rate of rotation depends upon the rate of consumption of the commodity, the rotating component being visible through a wall of the sealed housing. The apparatus comprises: a casing (38) which substantially completely covers the wall of the meter (2) and includes a transparent region (62) through which the rotating component (14) can be viewed and an optical assembly (64) for monitoring rotation of the rotating component. Preferably the optical assembly (64) comprises a light source (66) which is amplitude modulated at a selected frequency and is arranged to direct light (70) through the housing onto the rotating component (14) and a light detector (68) to detect reflected light (74) from the rotating component (14), the apparatus further including a synchronous detector circuit (82) connected to the detector (68) and operated at the selected frequency and processing means (96) arranged to count the number of revolutions of the component (14) using the output signal from the synchronous detector circuit (82).
