Abstract: Devices, computer-readable media, and methods for differential adaptive bitrate streaming based on scene complexity are disclosed. In one example, a method includes inferring, by a processor, a complexity of a scene contained in a first chunk of an adaptive bitrate streaming video, wherein the first chunk is a next chunk of the adaptive bitrate streaming video to be downloaded to an adaptive bitrate streaming video player, and wherein the complexity indicates a relative amount of spatial and temporal information contained in the scene, and selecting, by the processor, a first track from which to download the first chunk, wherein the first track is one of a plurality of tracks containing the first chunk, and wherein each track of the plurality of tracks encoded the first chunk at a different bitrate, and wherein a bitrate of the first track is proportional to the complexity of the scene as inferred.

Abstract: This disclosure provides a unique approach for the synthesis of non-stoichiometric, mesoporous metal oxides with nano-sized crystalline wall. The as-synthesized mesoporous metal oxide is very active and stable (durability >11 h) electocatalyst in both acidic and alkaline conditions. The intrinsic mesoporous metal oxide serves as an electrocatalyst without the assistant of carbon materials, noble metals, or other materials, which are widely used in previously developed systems. The as-synthesized mesoporous metal oxide has large accessible pores (2-50 nm), which are able to facilitate mass transport and charge transfer. The as-synthesized mesoporous metal oxide requires a low overpotential and is oxygen deficient. Oxygen vacancies and mesoporosity served as key factors for excellent performance.

Abstract: An imaging system includes a sample mount for holding a sample, a light source configured to emit a light beam, a diffuser configured to transform the light beam into a speckle illumination beam, a mirror configured to reflect the speckle illumination beam toward the sample, a scanning mechanism configured to scan the mirror to a plurality of mirror angles such that the speckle illumination beam is incident on the sample at a plurality of angles of incidence, and an image sensor configured to acquire a plurality of images as the mirror is being scanned. Each respective image corresponds to a respective angle of incidence. The imaging system further includes a processor configured to process the plurality of images to recover a complex profile of the sample based on positional shifts extracted from the plurality of images.

Abstract: A load-bearing bone fixation composite includes a polymer matrix, a plurality of polymer fibers aligned along a common axis and disposed in the polymer matrix, wherein the polymer matrix binds the surface of the polymer fibers, and a plurality of high aspect ratio nanorods coating at least a portion of each of the polymer fibers, wherein the long axis of at least a portion of the nanorods is aligned with the common axis, and wherein the high aspect nanorods have an aspect ratio of 10 or greater. Further included is a bone fixation device including the foregoing composite. A method of bone fixation comprises affixing the foregoing composite to a site of a load-bearing bone fracture, or maxillofacial bone fracture. Also included are methods of making the composites.

Abstract: The present disclosure includes systems and methods for detecting and recognizing human gestures or activity in a group of 3D volumes using integral imaging. In exemplary embodiments, a camera array including multiple image capturing devices captures multiple images of a point-of-interest in a 3D scene. The multiple images can be used to reconstruct a group of 3D volumes of the point-of-interest using the images. The system detects spatiotemporal interest points (STIPs) in the group of 3D volumes and assigns descriptors to each of the plurality of STIPs. The descriptors are quantized into a number of visual words to create clusters of the group of 3D volumes. The system builds a histogram for each of the visual words. Each 3D volume is classified using the histogram of the plurality of visual words, implying the classification of a human gesture in each 3D volumes.

Abstract: A Dual-wavelength hybrid (DWH) device includes an n-type ohmic contact layer, cathode and anode terminal electrodes, first and second injector terminal electrodes, p-type and n-type modulation doped QW structures, and first through sixth ion implant regions. The first injector terminal electrode is formed on the third ion implant region that contacts the p-type modulation doped QW structure and the second injector terminal electrode is formed on the fourth ion implant region that contacts the n-type modulation doped QW structure. The DWH device operates in at least one of a vertical cavity mode and a whispering gallery mode. In the vertical cavity mode, the DWH device converts an in-plane optical mode signal to a vertical optical mode signal, whereas in the whispering gallery mode the DWH device converts a vertical optical mode signal to an in-plane optical mode signal.
