    Abstract: PURPOSE: A gas-forming mixture used in gas-heat-chemical treatment of phosphate glass is provided, which has much improved thermal impact resistance by using NH4Cl and oxides compared with conventional gas-forming mixture using NH4Cl. CONSTITUTION: The gas-forming mixture is characterized by the following components of; (i) NH4Cl; (ii) a compound containing at least one oxide-such as kaolinite(Al2O3.2SiO2.2H2O) or aluminum borate(Al2O3.B2O3), or one oxide of III, IV and V groups such as Ga2O3, Fe2O3, Sb2O3, CeO2, SiO2, TiO2, Nb2O5 or Ta2O5, wherein the weight ratio of NH4Cl to oxides is 98.0-99.3 : 0.7-2.0.
