Abstract:
For use in an electrostatographic reproduction apparatus (10), a roller transfer assembly (20) of compact configuration for effecting transfer of a pigmented marking particle image from a dielectric support (12) to a receiver member. The roller transfer assembly (20) comprises an electrically biased transfer roller (42), a mechanism (44) for cleaning the transfer roller, and a detack mechanism (24) for facilitating release of the receiver member from the dielectric support. A unitary housing (40) is provided for supporting the transfer roller (42) for free rotation about its longitudinal axis, supporting the cleaning mechanism (44) in operative association with the transfer roller, and for supporting the detack mechanism (24). The unitary housing (40) is supported for movement to a first position in operative association with the dielectric support and a second inoperative position remote from the dielectric support, and a mechanism (90) is provided for selectively moving the unitary housing to the first position or to the second position.
Abstract:
Apparatus and method are disclosed in which a beam of radiant energy (16) is passed into a medium at a wavelength selected to cause a response of an analyte in the medium or of a sensor (10, 14) exposed to the medium, the sensor comprising a reagent whose optical properties change in response to the presence of the analyte in the medium. A perturbing pulse of energy (22) is passed into the medium to alter the response of the analyte or reagent to the beam of radiation; and the time rates of change in the intensity of the transmitted radiant energy are measured (18, 24, 26, 28) while the response is changing due to the influence of the perturbing pulse, after the perturbing pulse starts or ends or both, such rates of change being proportional to the concentration of the analyte in the medium. Both the beam of radiant energy and the perturbing pulse may be passed through optic fibers into the medium or sensor.

Abstract:
A process for the production of carbonyl compounds such as acetaldehyde is provided. This process entails reacting alpha olefins with a catalyst system containing a noble metal oxidation catalyst, cupric ions, chloride ions, and a strong acid such as sulfuric acid followed by separating into a carbonyl compound stream and a reduced catalyst stream followed by oxidizing the catalyst stream and returning it to the reaction zone at a pH between 0 and 2.
Abstract:
Disclosed is a method for reducing olefinic impurities in solutions of carboxylic acids and/or anhydrides which comprises contacting said solution with a strongly acidic resin.
Abstract:
The invention provides a method for reducing carryover reagents in the wet processing of a gelatin-based photographic material which method comprises causing the swellability of the gelatin layer in a first treatment bath to be reduced and maintaining said reduced swellability in the subsequent treatment baths thereby to reduce reagent carryover between baths. The process may be effected by reducing gel laydown of the photographic material or by adding a hardener in the first treatment bath. Not only is carryover reduced but also commensurately replenisher values and effluent are reduced.
Abstract:
The invention is generally accomplished by forming a silver halide emulsion and during precipitation adding iridium and selenium in an amount effective to decrease reciprocity failure with substantially no decrease in speed. In a preferred form, a photographic element is formed comprising of bromoiodide emulsion having about 3 to about 88 nanograms of iridium per square meter of silver halide grain surface area and about 42 to about 487 nanograms of selenium per square meter of silver halide grain surface area. It is also preferred that the iridium and selenium be added at a point after the precipitation has proceeded to a point wherein at least half of the silver to be added is present.
Abstract:
Photographic emulsions are quickly chilled to a homogeneous, particulate gel by injection of carbon dioxide coolant, while the emulsion is agitated. This process is carried out in a housing having a pair of parallel auger screws to transport emulsion circuitously within the housing. Carbon dioxide coolant is injected through a plurality of nozzles in the housing and is then removed from the housing through a vent line.
Abstract:
A multipurpose interface circuit through which the control current for operating an electromagnetically driven shutter actuator (12) for a still camera may be precisely defined throughout a shutter actuation sequence (open, hold and close) has a clock signal counter unit, which contains a set of counter circuits associated with respective components of the shutter actuator drive current waveform. The counter circuits are sequentially enabled to count clock signals generated by a clock signal generator. The counter circuits produce output signals in accordance with a set of relationships among the numbers of clock signals counted and a set of camera shutter control codes representative of desired shutter aperture size and shutter speed. A control circuit is coupled to the clock signal counter unit for controlling the generation of the respective components of the actuator drive current in accordance with output signals produced by the clock signal counter circuit.
