Abstract: Prodn. of fluorobenzophenones (I) is effected by subjecting 4-halobenzophenones of formula (II) to a halogen exchange reaction with an alkali metal fluoride: (X is Cl, Br or I; n = 1-5; each R is independently H, alkyl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkoxy, aryloxy, alkylthio, alkoxycarbonyl, acetyl, CF3, NO2, Cl, Br or I). The reaction is pref. effected at 100-350 deg.C. in organic solvent, esp. in presence of phase transfer catalyst. 4,4'-Difluorobenzophenone (Ia) is an intermediate for aromatic polyketone polymers; 4-fluorobenzophenone derivs. are useful as agrochemicals, drugs and dyestuff intermediates. Process gives high yields (e.g. 65-85%) using readily available starting materials; the prods. are readily isolated by solvent extn. or distn.
