A system constant is chosen which defines the product of the received power and the transmitted pilot power at every base station. The reverse link power level is measured at the base station and the forward link power level is compensated for the reverse link loading to maintain the constant product. Thereby the forward link handoff boundary to the reverse link handoff boundary are aligned to the same location.

Abstract: The layers and protocols of an air interface layering architecture are designed to be modular and can be modified and upgraded to support new features, perform complex tasks, and implement additional functionality. Prior to commencement of data communication between a first entity (e.g., an access terminal) and a second entity (e.g., a radio network), a set of layers and/or protocols is selected for negotiation. For each selected layer and protocol (i.e., each attribute), a list of attribute values considered acceptable to the first entity is determined. The selected attributes and their associated attribute values are sent from the first entity and, in response, a list of processed attributes and their associated lists of processed attribute values arc received. Each list of processed attribute values includes attribute values considered acceptable to the second entity. The layers and protocols in the first entity are then configured in accordance with the received list of processed attributes and their associated processed attribute values. Other features related to configurable layers and protocols are also provided.

Abstract: Micro-tunnels are used to provide multiple data service sessions to the same mobile node in a wireless communications system. Further, the flexibility of the micro-tunnels optimizes the resources of the system. On request for a data service, an encapsulation configuration record is generated. An encapsulation header is created in response to the encapsulation configuration. The encapsulation header includes a packet service identifier and a micro-tunnel identifier.

Abstract: In a method and system for monitoring a control channel in a telecommunication system, the transmission of the overhead parameters is separated from the transmission of the packets that are directed to an access terminal. Consequently, the access terminal may need to monitor a control channel for a shorter period of time if a current message indicates that the received set of overhead parameters is up to date. In this case, the access terminal with up-to-date overhead parameters may stop monitoring the control channel before the end of a synchronous capsule time period. Otherwise, the access terminal may continue to monitor the control channel until an up-to-date set of overhead parameters is received.

Abstract: The present invention is a novel method and apparatus for providing transparent mobility of an entity within a network. The present invention allows a given entity, which has a communication path set up between it and a peer entity, to move from one location to another, without informing the peer entity of this movement, and without having the communication path broken. The present invention is applicable to decentralized networks using the IP protocol, and is particularly applicable on networks wherein it is desired that the mobility mechanism neither introduces latency nor decreases the available bandwidth of the network. In the present invention, neither is latency increased nor is bandwidth utilization increased, as is done in other mobility models. Additionally, the present invention utilizes standard protocols that are widely available from a plurality of equipment manufacturers on a variety of platforms. Thus, the present invention provides a very cost-effective model for network providers that need to support transparent mobility within their network.

Abstract: A communication system that allows a soft handoff to be completed, even when the communications link between the active base station and the mobile station deteriorates before the mobile station (101) has received the handoff direction message. The mobile station maintains a list of base stations that the mobile station (101) is in communication with, referred to as an "Active Set". In addition, the mobile station (101) maintains another list of base stations (300) that are proximate to the base stations (300) in the active set. This list is referred to as the "Neighbor Set". A memory within the mobile station (101) includes information that would allow the mobile station (101) to demodulate information transmitted from those base stations (300) on the neighbor set. In accordance with the disclosed method and apparatus, the mobile station (101) places a base station (300) in the active set upon including the base station (300) in a pilot strength measurement message (PSMM).

Abstract: A first network access point receives a first wireless link message from a first user terminal. The first wireless link message identifies the first user terminal. The first network access point or other system entity assigns an IP address to the first user terminal for use as a temporary mobile station identifier. The first network access point or other system entity installs a route for the IP address to a controller. The first network access point forwards a wireless link message to the user terminal specifying the IP address. The first or a second network access point receives another wireless link message from the first user terminal in which the first user terminal is identified with the IP address. The first or second network access point parses the message to determine the IP address and creates at least one standard IP packet designating the IP address specified in the message. The first or second network access point forwards the message to a router which routes the packet according to the IP address.
