Monomeric esters referred to are isobutyl butyrate, N-octyl acetate iso-octyl acetate, N-heptyl propionate, N-hexyl isobutyrate, N-hexyl n-butyrate, amyl valerate, N-butyl caproate, N-propyl heptanoate, ethyl caprylate, nonyl acetate, N-hexyl valerate, amyl caproate, butyl n-heptanoate, N-propyl iso-octanoate, isopropyl caprylate, ethyl nonanoate, iso-octyl butyrate, amyl heptanoate, butyl iso-octanoate, isopropyl nonanoate, ethylcaproate, nonyl butyrate, ethyl laurate, butyl laurate and esters obtained by esterifying mixtures of alcohols from the Oxo process, for example with acetic or propionic acids. An antioxidant, for example 2, 6-ditertiary-butyl-4-methyl phenol, may be added to the compositions.

Abstract: A lubricating grease comprises a major proportion of lubricating oil and a minor proportion of a mixture of a monovalent metal soap of a substantially saturated C12-C22 fatty acid, or mixture of such acids, and a divalent metal salt of a C1-C5 carboxylic acid, or mixture of such acids. The lubricating oil may be a mineral oil or an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid ester oil such as di-2-ethyl-hexyl sebacate. The soap is preferably a lithium soap of a saturated fatty acid, while the divalent metal salt is preferably an alkaline earth metal salt, particularly a calcium salt, of acetic, propionic, acrylic, methacrylic, furoic or thiophene carboxylic acid. Additives such as extreme pressure agents, oiliness agents, thickeners, metal deactivators, oxidation inhibitors (such as phenylamines, particularly phenyl alpha-naphthylamine) and plasticizers may be incorporated in the grease. In the preparation of the grease, the soap may either be preformed and added to the oil as a dry powder or it may be formed in the mineral oil and completely dehydrated before the divalent metal salt is added as a dry powder. Alternatively, the divalent metal salt may be mixed with the dry powdered soap and the mixture incorporated in dehydrated mineral oil. A concentrate may first be produced and, after adding more oil sufficient to permit complete dispersion of the solids, the mixture may be completely melted and then allowed to cool. More oil may then be added if a softer grease is desired. The final grease may be passed through a homogenizing apparatus under high shear conditions. In examples, lubricating greases are prepared which consist of (1) mineral lubricating oil, lithium soap of p hydrogenated fish oil fatty acids, calcium acetate or acrylate and phenyl alpha-naphthylamine and (2) di-2-ethyl-hexyl sebacate, lithium stearate, calcium acetate and phenyl alpha-naphthylamine. The greases may contain free alkalinity.

Abstract: In the process of the parent Specification the reaction product from the initial synthesis stage is freed from dissolved catalyst by adding liquid water to the reaction product and heating the mixture to an elevated temperature at which it is maintained for a sufficient time to decompose the catalyst compound. Preferably from 2 to 50 per cent by volume of water is added and the temperature maintained at 250-500 DEG F. with pressures of 0-500, especially 50-175 p.s.i.g. The reaction products are allowed to settle and catalyst recovered from the aqueous layer, e.g. as cobalt formate or basic formate, and returned to the synthesis. The product layer may be hydrogenated to alcohols or oxidized to acids. A residence time of about two hours is given. The crude aldehyde product may be degassed, e.g. by reducing pressure, before water treatment. Cobalt and iron are specified catalysts. Tests are described in which decobalting by water injection is shown to be superior to steam or thermal treatment.

Abstract: A lubricating composition, suitable for use on the external controls of aircraft, comprises a major proportion of mineral lubricating oil and minor proportions each of an oil-soluble viscosity index improver (which is a polymeric material having a molecular weight in the range 8,000 to 25,000 Standinger, particularly polyisobutylene or depolymerized synthetic rubber), an oil-soluble tackiness agent (which is a polymeric material having a molecular weight in the range 40,000 to 120,000 Standinger, particularly polyisobutylene or depolymerized synthetic rubber) and an oil-soluble synthetic lubricating oil containing an esterified carboxyl group in the molecule. The synthetic lubricating oil is preferably a simple ester, diester, partial ester or complex ester formed from one or more C10-C18 organic mono- or poly-carboxylic acids and one or more C3-C9 mono- or polyhydric alcohols. Thus, the ester may be formed from two mols. of a monohydric alcohol and one mol. of a dicarboxylic acid, for example dinonyl sebacate. Alternatively, it may be formed from equimolecular proportions of a monohydric alcohol and a monocarboxylic acid, for example isopropyl oleate. In an example, a lubricating composition is prepared from mineral lubricating oil, a concentrate of polyisobutylene (M.W. about 10,000) in mineral oil, a concentrate of polyisobutylene (M.W. about 100,000) in mineral oil, and dinonyl sebacate. For comparison purposes, a similar composition is described from which the dinonyl sebacate is omitted.ALSO:A lubricating composition, suitable for use on the external controls of aircraft, comprises a major proportion of mineral lubricating oil and minor proportions each of an oil-soluble viscosity index improver (which is a polymeric material having a molecular weight in the range 8,000 to 25,000 Staudinger, particularly polyisobutylene or depolymerized synthetic rubber), an oil-soluble tackiness agent (which is a polymeric material having a molecular weight in the range 40,000 to 120,000 Staudinger, particularly polyisobutylene or depolymerized synthetic rubber) and an oil-soluble synthetic lubricating oil containing an esterified carboxyl group in the molecule.
