Abstract: Condensation products made by reacting an alpha-haloalkyl hydroxy-aromatic compound also having at least one non-fused hydrocarbyl substituent with at least one olefinic nitrile, carboxylic acid or carboxylic acid derivative are useful as additives for fuels and lubricants. The number of carbon atoms in the aromatic hydrocarbyl compound's substituents are each about 25 while the haloalkyl group contains from one to about 36 carbons. The acid or nitrile reactant usually contains three to about forty carbons. Products made from halomethyl alkyl-substituted phenols and .alpha.,.beta.-olefinic diacid derivatives such as maleic anhydride are particularly useful. Similarly useful products can be made from these condensation products by further reacting their acid, acid derivative or nitrile groups with alcohols, polyols, monoamines, polyamines, metal salts or metals.

Abstract: Oil-soluble, nitrogen-containing compositions, useful as lubricating oil additives, are provided. These compositions are prepared by reacting: (a) an aryl ester of a hydrocarbylethylsulfonic acid; or (b) a hydrocarbylsulfonyl chloride with a nitrogen-containing compound containing at least one amine hydrogen, i.e., --NH function. Also provided are processes for preparing these compositions and lubricating oil additive concentrates and lubricating oil compositions containing these compositions.

Abstract: A lubricating oil additive composition which imparts improved oxidation properties to crankcase lubricants comprises an antioxidant selected from aromatic and alkyl sulfides and polysulfides, sulfurized olefins, sulfurized carboxylic acid esters and sulfurized ester-olefins, and a secondary amine of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R and R' are aliphatic radicals. Lubricating oil compositions containing this additive composition are also disclosed.

Abstract: Disclosed are combinations of amino phenols, wherein said phenols contain a substantially saturated hydrocarbon substituent of at least 10 aliphatic carbon atoms, and one or more detergent/dispersants selected from the group consisting of (I) neutral or basic metal salts of an organic sulfur acid, phenol or carboxylic acid; (II) hydrocarbylsubstituted amines wherein the hydrocarbyl substituent is substantially aliphatic and contains at least 12 carbon atoms; (III) acylated nitrogen-containing compounds having a substituent of at least 10 aliphatic carbon atoms; and (IV) nitrogen-containing condensates of a phenol, aldehyde and amino compound. Fuels and lubricants containing such combinations as additives are particularly useful in two-cycle (two-stroke) engines.

Abstract: A novel composition constituting a mixture of 1, 3, 5-tri (variegated alkanols) hexahydro-s-triazines and 1, 3, 5 trialkanol hexahydro-s-triazines, where the alkanol moieties have from 1 to 4 carbon atoms. The composition is made by reacting a mixture of monoalkanolamines, preferably in substantially equal gram-molecular proportions, with paraformaldehyde and stripping off the water formed by the reaction. The composition is used by adding a bactericidally or fungicidally effective amount thereof to a carrier which is to be protected against the activity of bacteria or fungi or which is to be applied to a substrate to be so protected. The carrier may be a solid medium, such as solid soap or a liquid medium such as liquid soap, water or an organic liquid, e.g., a liquid alcohol or a liquid hydrocarbon. Typical carriers are cutting oil, hydraulic fluid, varnish, shellac, water- and oil-based paints, methanol, ethanol and propanol, liquid adhesives, cleaners and disinfectants.

Abstract: A long chain monocarboxylic acid is reacted with a trialkanolamine to produce an ester and this ester is then treated with sulfonic acid to produce a sulfonate to provide compounds which are suitable as ashless detergent additives and the method for producing these compounds are provided. In a preferred embodiment the ashless fuel detergent additives are combined with hydrocarbons suitable as fuel in an internal combustion engine to provide ashless fuel and lubricant detergent compositions.
