Abstract:
A method and apparatus that allow users having access to a facsimile (fax) machine to send, receive, and manage e-mail easily. If the user selects a "Direct Receipt" receive mode, e-mail is automatically sent to his fax machine, where it is automatically printed out and can be read. If the user selects "Receipt on Demand" mode, the user calls a predetermined telephone number and answers voice prompts to instruct the system where to fax his (held) unread e-mail. The user can also be notified of unread e-mail being held, via pager or telephone. In either case, the fax received by the user contains the contents of the e-mail message intended for the user. To send e-mail from his fax machine, the user uses an "address book" of e-mail addresses, each of which is associated with a fax telephone number (also called an "internet fax number"). If the user sends a fax message to an internet fax number associated with a particular recipient in the user's address book, the system sends an e-mail message containing the contents of the fax message to the recipient associated with the internet fax number.
Abstract:
An interfacing device (12) for a facsimile device (10) is disclosed. The facsimile device is coupled by the interfacing device as a node to a local-area network (18). A facsimile sent by the facsimile device is received by the interfacing device, which routes the facsimile to a recipient electronic mail addressee over a communications network (26) as an attachment to an electronic mail, instead of only to a recipient phone number over a phone line. The attachment is preferably viewable at the recipient node using a viewing program installed on the recipient node.
Abstract:
In a device with limited processor and/or memory capability, such as a Personal Digital Assistant or handheld computer, that has a viewscreen (45), a method and system for viewing a facsimile transmission image. After being sent, the facsimile transmission is routed to and intercepted by a computer system for processing before it reaches the device. The processing of the facsimile transmission includes recognizing text and outputting it, along with rendering information such as position, to a transmittal file. Once the recognizable text has been filtered from the facsimile transmission, the remaining images are edge-fit and output to the transmittal data file by position and other rendering information. The transmittal file is sent to the device with the viewscreen. The device then uses the information contained within the transmittal file to render a version of the facsimile transmission image and display it on the viewscreen.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for transmitting class 1, 2, or 3 facsimile image data over Internet Global Area Networks is shown. A first device (16) converts facsimile image data from a local facsimile machine (14) into electronic mail format data and transmits the electronic mail format data over a network (12) to a second remote device (16) which converts the electronic mail format data to facsimile image data for print out by a remote facsimile machine (26) connected thereto.
Abstract:
The invention concerns a method of setting up a data-processing and data-transmission system using a personal computer (PC) and fax transceiver. The aim of the invention is to connect up this equipment in such a way that the individual functional units of both items of equipment can be controlled and operated by the personal computer. This is achieved by virtue of the fact that impulses an commands generated by the personal computer are translated into a control language which the fax equipment can recognize and process. This makes it possible to set up an inexpensive data-processing and data-transmission system.
Abstract:
A computer system (10) is described that includes a capability to receive and store graphic images form remote facsimile machines (30). The system includes a software (16) that can convert graphic images of textual material into an ASCII coded file so that either keywords or the converted text may be converted to speech giving the adressee-user the ability to review incoming facsimiles from a remote telephone (36). The system includes a relay capability, the capability to print on command and to originate fascimiles either from text files or scanned papers.
