    Abstract: A damping mechanism for a lost motion hydraulic actuator utilizes a thin edge orifice in cooperation with a communication passageway between the upper and lower chambers controls the damping of the upper piston on closure. The upper piston is operatively connected to the engine valve of an internal combustion engine. A communication port from the upper chamber to the communication passageway is closed off as the upper piston returns to its normal position forcing the flow of the hydraulic fluid through the thin edge orifice. In this manner the viscosity of the hydraulic fluid does not control the damping of the actuator and the noise factor is substantially reduced.

    Abstract: A hydraulic lifter has an upper plunger member and a lower plunger member slidably received in a bore of a casing. A reservoir chamber is formed in the upper and lower plunger members for receiving hydraulic fluid, and a pressure chamber is formed between a blind bottom end of the casing and the bottom of the lower plunger. Both chambers are fluidly connected through a check valve. In order to vent air in the reservoir chamber and thereby to prevent air from entering the pressure chamber, there is formed in the upper plunger member at least one air vent hole located above a fluid inlet of the reservoir chamber. There is further formed a fluid passage between the upper plunger and the lower plunger for allowing fluid in the clearance between the casing and the plunger members to return to the reservoir chamber. This fluid passage may comprises a plurality of radially extending grooves formed either in the face of the bottom end of the upper plunger or in the face of the top end of the lower plunger.

    Abstract: A method of assembling a valve train in an internal combustion engine, which valve train comprises a camshaft (5), an hydraulic tappet (6), a valve rocker (1), a sliding contact element (9) fixed to one arm of the rocker (1) and effecting sliding contact between the hydraulic tappet (6) and the valve rocker (1). and a poppet valve (7) actuated by the other arm of the valve rocker, the method comprising the steps of (a) grading a supply of sliding contact elements (9) into a plurality of tolerance range groups corresponding to the amount by which the sliding contact elements would space the said one arm of the valve rocker from the hydraulic tappet, (b) assembling the camshaft (5), hydraulic tappet (6), valve rocker (1), and poppet valve (7) on the internal combustion engine, (c) measuring the gap (Y) between the said one arm and the hydraulic tappet which should be occupied by the sliding contact element, (d) selecting a sliding contact element (9) from the tolerance groups corresponding most closely to the measured gap, and (e) securing the selected sliding contact element (9) in the valve rocker (1) without disassembling the valve train.

An open ended tappet body 32 has a plunger 38 having seat 62 for a part-spherical end of a push rod 82 having its other end 84, of smaller diameter, fitting in a socket 86 of a rocker arm 12. The spherical engagement ends of the push rod allows swivelling to compensate for the arcuate path taken by the end of the rocker arm. Lubrication is effected through passageways 18, 36, 40 into the reservoir 46 of the plunger 38, which is closed by a check valve of a plate 52 and spring 50, and thence through metering means 60 comprising ridges 66, 70 and a metering disc 72 with apertures 74 to an opening 64 and thence to a passageway 89. The oil in the reservoir 46 holds the push rod 82 in constant contact with the rocker arm while sufficient pressure retracts the plunger 38 by oil passing the check valve 50, 52.
