Abstract: An online concierge system generates a graph connecting items with attributes of the items and other items. Hence, the graph includes nodes corresponding to attributes and nodes corresponding to items, with an item connected to attributes of the item in the graph. Example attributes include a brand, a category, a department, or any other suitable information about the item. When the online concierge system receives a search query to identify one or more items from a customer, the online concierge system parses the search query into combinations of terms and compares different combinations of terms to the graph to determine connections between different combinations of terms in the graph. Based on measures of connectedness between combinations of terms and connections in the graph, items are identified from one or more combinations of terms. Information about the identified items is presented to the customer.

Abstract: A warehouse from which shoppers fulfill orders for an online concierge system maintains an online concierge system-specific portion for which the online concierge system specifies placement of items in regions. To place items in the online concierge system-specific portion, the online concierge system accounts for co-occurrences of different items in orders and measures of similarity between different items. From the co-occurrences of items, the online concierge system generates an affinity graph. The online concierge system also generates a colocation graph based on distances between different regions in the online concierge system-specific portion. Using an optimization function with the affinity graph and the colocation graph, the online concierge system selects regions within the online concierge system-specific portion for different items to minimize an amount of time for shoppers to obtain items in the online concierge-system specific portion.

Abstract: An online system receives, from a customer mobile application (CMA) an order including an item that requires verification of delivery. The online system transmits an indication that the order includes the item to a delivery mobile application (DMA). The DMA transmits a real-time location of a client device of a delivery agent to the online system. Responsive to determining that the delivery agent is at a delivery location, the online system transmits an indication to the DMA to display a user interface including an interactive element for requesting a receipt from a customer. Responsive to receiving an indication of an interaction with the interactive element, the online system transmits an indication to the CMA to display a user interface with a verification element. The CMA transmits a receipt received via the verification element to the online system, which stores the receipt as verification information.

Abstract: A shopping cart's tracking system determines a first baseline location of the shopping cart at a first timestamp with a wireless device located on the shopping cart detecting one or more external wireless devices (e.g., RFID tags) in the indoor environment. The shopping cart's tracking system receives wheel motion data from one or more wheel sensors coupled to one or more wheels of the shopping cart, wherein the wheel motion data describes rotation of the one or more wheels. The shopping cart's tracking system calculates a translation traveled by the shopping cart from the first baseline location based on the wheel motion data. The shopping cart's tracking system determines an estimated location of the shopping cart at a second timestamp based on the first baseline location and the translation. With the estimated location, the shopping cart can update a map with the estimated location of the shopping cart.

Abstract: An online concierge system uses a domain-adaptive suggestion module to score products that may be presented to a user as suggestions in response to a user's search query. The domain-adaptive suggestion module receives data that is relevant to scoring products as suggestions in response to a search query. The domain-adaptive suggestion module uses one or more domain-neutral representation models to generate a domain-neutral representation of the received data. The domain-neutral representation is a featurized representation of the received data that can be used by machine-learning models in the search domain or the suggestion domain. The domain-adaptive suggestion module then scores products by applying one or more machine-learning models to domain-neutral representations generated based on those products. By using domain-neutral representations, the domain-adaptive suggestion module can be trained based on training examples from a similar prediction task in a different domain.

Abstract: An online shopping concierge system sorts a list of items to be picked in a warehouse by receiving data identifying a warehouse and items to be picked by a picker in the warehouse. The system retrieves a machine-learned model that predicts a next item of a picking sequence of items. The model was trained, using machine-learning, based on sets of data that each include a list of picked items, an identification of a warehouse from which the items were picked, and a sequence in which the items were picked. The system identifies an item to pick first and a plurality of remaining items. The system predicts, using the model, a next item to be picked based on the remaining items, the first item, and the warehouse. The system transmits data identifying the first item and the predicted next item to be picked to the picker in the warehouse.

Abstract: A system receives an order from one or more user client devices associated with an account of the system, and transmits a first notification to the one or more user client devices that an order is ready for pick up at a pickup location. The system receives location data from a particular user client device of the one or more user client devices. The system determines an outer geofence based in part on a running average time or wait time at the pickup location in a recent time period, a size of the order, or a historical wait time associated with the account. In response to receiving an indication from the particular user client device that a user associated with the particular user has entered the determined outer geofence, the system transmits a second notification to a runner client device.
