    Abstract: A two-level alarm monitor for use with a hot box detector system of the type having first and second sensors each associated with a rail of a track is provided. The monitor includes means connected to the outputs of the sensors for obtaining the difference between the output signals of the sensors and for comparing the difference alternately to first and second predetermined levels which may, for example, represent "warm" and "hot" differential alarm levels or differential alarm levels for friction and roller bearings. The outputs of the sensors are also alternately compared with third and fourth predetermined levels which could, for example, represent "warm" and "hot" absolute alarm levels or absolute alarm levels for friction or roller bearings. The output signals from the comparators are demultiplexed and utilized to generate an alarm signal in the event differential signals or absolute alarm signals exceed associated predetermined levels.

[Also in Group XXXIX] A non-contact-making selector switch for connecting the antennµ of a radio-navigation system to a transmitter or receiver 10 comprises a non-magnetic stator disc 2 carrying one or more circular sets of half-toroid transformer sections 3 and a co-operating non-magnetic rotor disc carrying one or more similar halftoroid members 7 connected to 10 through a centrally arranged transformer 12, 13, 15. The discs may be of epoxy resin and the transformer core members of soft iron or nickel-zinc or manganese-zinc ferrite. The windings 5 on the half-toroid transformer sections 3 are each coupled to an antennµ terminal 6. The ends of core members 7 are wider than the ends 4 of members 3. An aluminium or brass housing may be provided.

    Abstract: 820,919. Hot-axle detectors. SERVO CORPORATION OF AMERICA. Nov. 6, 1957 [Nov. 6, 1956; Aug. 6, 1957], No. 34657/57. Class 40 (3). A detector for the hot axle bearings of rail wagons comprises a heat-responsive control element, e.g. an infra-red detecting thermistor, mounted alongside the track, and an inclined optical system with its axis preferably at 20- 50 degrees to the horizontal and in a plane parallel to the rail track. There may be two such systems pointing in opposite directions with trip means operating shutters appropriate to the direction of movement of the wagons. There may be two heat detectors with separate optical systems, or a single detector with a mirror operated by the trip means, to incline in the receiving direction and reflecting the heat on to the detector. Alternatively, the shutters are controlled and held by the trip means. The journal box 18 is progressively scanned by the detector 10 as the rail car 19 moves along the track 13. The wheel trip 34 maybe a magnetic circuit closed by the wheel flange 25 and in a circuit containing a single-stability multivibrator or a time-delay grop-out relay giving a gate interval for the detector of about 50 milliseconds, sufficient even for slow trains of 5 m.p.h. A storage device in conjunction with the wheel trip operates the shutter of the detector for a sufficient period when the train is slow. Two wheel trips in series with a flip-flop circuit give a square gating pulse sufficient for full exposure of the hot box (Fig. 6, not shown). A single detector cell 14 (Fig. 8) serves duplicate optical systems 44, 44 , with shutters 51, 52 operated by solenoids 53, 54. The sequence in which the wheel trips 34, 56 are operated affects the directionally responsive switch 74 which determines the actuation of the solenoid and storage means 38, 38 , supplies a steady signal to relay means 76 to control the trip pulses, and turns on the recorder, alarm and telemetering devices 30, 31, 32.

    Abstract: A solid-state circuit is described for controlling a railroad signal delay device wherein the time element is formed by a capacitor and a resistor. A polarized relay is employed in a discharge circuit formed by the capacitor, a semiconductor switch and the coil of the relay. Expiration of the time element operates to close the switch in the discharge circuit. The coil of the relay is so oriented in the circuit that during capacitor charging, the magnetic bias is effectively increased, whereas during the discharge initiated by the closing of the semiconductor switch, the bias is overcome.
