    Abstract: Elastomeric polymers are produced by polymerising a 1,3-diene using a catalyst prepared from a mixture of metallic cobalt and/or nickel with an aluminium halide. The diene may be butadiene, isoprene, 2,3-dimethyl-butadiene or chloroprene. A cyclic olefine having more than one double bond, e.g. cyclododecatriene-1,5,9, cyclooctadiene-1,5, or cyclooctatetrane, and/or a substance which forms complexes with aluminium halides, e.g. ethers, amines such as N-phenyl-8-naphthylamine, salts of alkali and alkaline earth metals such as NaCl, thioethers, phosphines, arsines or stibenes, may be used as co-catalysts. The halide may be AlCl3 or AlBr3, and may be used together with the cobalt or nickel in powdered form. Raney nickel or cobalt, or alloys containing these metals may be used. The diene may be mixed with substances inert during polymerisation, e.g. butane or butene, which may be carried out in a solvent, e.g. hydrocarbons, or in bulk continuously or batchwise. The catalyst may be destroyed after polymerisation by addition of water or methanol, e.g. after precipitating with hydrogen sulphide. The transparent polymers may be used for car tyres.
