Abstract:
A radio receiver for a radio operable in a radio communication system utilizing either a wideband standard such as GSM or a narrowband standard such as IS-54. The radio receiver has a wideband mode for demodulating wideband signals and a narrowband mode for demodulating narrowband signals. The radio receiver uses a wideband filter apparatus having a wide filter bandwidth adapted to the wideband signals for filtering both the wideband and narrowbans signals. When in the narrowband mode, a digitizer digitizes the filtered signals containing the narrowband signal and produces digital signals having amplitude and phase signals corresponding to the filtered signals. A digital signal processor is used to frequency-shift the digital signals so as to shift the narrowband signals to the center frequency of the wideband filter apparatus. The frequency-shifted narrowband signals are then filtered to select the centered narrowband signals and the narrowband signals are then demodulated. The digital signal processor is adapted to frequency-shift a plurality of different narrowband signals at different radio channel frequencies and to demodulate the different narrowband signals to provide for diversity combinaison.
Abstract:
A time-duplex wireless telephone for reducing magnetic coupling between the wireless telephone and a hearing aid to prevent hum pick-up in the hearing aid. The wireless telephone includes a battery, a radio circuit, and a humbucking coil. The radio circuit is connected to the battery and has a transmit mode where transmit signals are transmitted and a receive mode where received signals are received. The radio circuit intermittently is switched between the transmit mode and the receive mode. The radio circuit generates a transmission magnetic field when the radio circuit is transmitting transmit signals. A humbucking coil is connected in the radio circuit to generate a cancellation magnetic field that is directly proportional to the transmission magnetic field and in antiphase with the transmission magnetic field. The cancellation magnetic field at least partially cancels the transmission magnetic field and reduces magnetic coupling between the wireless telephone and a hearing aid used in conjunction with the wireless telephone.
Abstract:
A low complexity, high performance trellis decoder adapts the complexity of the trellis decoding process based on a current condition of the communications system. A trellis structure of nodes and branches is developed to decode the sequence of symbols received over a communications channel. Each set of nodes in the trellis represents the possible values of a received symbol at one time instant. Each branch defines a specific transition between nodes at different time instants, and each branch has an associated branch metric or weight. A linkage of branches between the nodes and the trellis defines a path through the trellis that represents one possible symbol sequence, and an accumulated metric/weight is generated for each possible path through the trellis. A variable number M survivor paths through the trellis is determined based on their accumulated path metric/weights. The value of the variable M depends on the current condition of the communications system. Once the value of M is adapted to the current condition, the sequence of received symbols is decoded using M survivor paths through the trellis.
Abstract:
A method and system for transmitting short data messages in a control station-based TDMA radiocommunication system. According to exemplary embodiments, selected TDMA frames are assigned as message frames, and one or more data slots from each message frame are assigned to transmitter/receivers. Data messages can be encoded and transmitted multiple times, at an increased power level, from a control station to a transmitter/receiver over the appropriate data slots in each message frame. The selected TDMA frames are preferably slow associated control channel frames.
Abstract:
A measure of a degree of convergence in an adaptive filter arrangement is derived from the comparison of an amount of adaptation occurring in the adaptive filter arrangement, over a predetermined period of time, with a normalizing value accumulated for the same period. Supplemental signal processing may be invoked, modified or withdrawn based upon the degree of convergence indicated.
Abstract:
A device (12) and associated method (72) for automatically transmitting information by way of a radio transceiver (24) responsive to a request for emergency assistance initiated by way of the radio transceiver (24). Informational data pertaining to a subscriber is stored in a portable memory element (38), such as a SIM memory card of a cellular, communication system (20). When entry of a request, such as entry of the digits "9-1-1" for emergency assistance is requested, the informational data is automatically accessed and transmitted to provide emergency personnel (22) with the informational data.
Abstract:
A telecommunications switch serving a roaming mobile station transports the resulting billing records by setting up a communication link with an administrative billing center connected to a Signaling System No. 7 (SS7) telecommunications network by utilizing Signal Connection Control Point (SCCP) signals. Once the connection is established between the telecommunication switch and the administrative billing center, Data Message Handler (DMH) formatted data are stored into a Data Form 2 (DT2) SCCP signal by the telecommunication switch and transported to the administrative billing center via the SS7 telecommunications network.

A telecommunications switch serving a roaming mobile station transports the resulting billing records by setting up a communication link with an administrative billing center connected to a Signaling System No. 7 (SS7) telecommunications network by utilizing Transaction Capabilities Application Part (TCAP) signals. Once the connection is established between the telecommunication switch and the administrative billing center, Data Message Handler (DMH) formatted data are stored into the SS7 TCAP Invoke signal by the telecommunication switch and transported to the administrative billing center via the SS7 telecommunications network.
Abstract:
A mobile-link system (10) for a radio communication system includes a first mobile-link assembly (16), a second mobile-link assembly (18), and a satellite feeder-link assembly (20) located on satellite (12); and an earth feeder-link assembly (22) located in earth station (14). The first and second mobile-link assemblies (16 and 18) operate in combination to transmit downlink signals to mobiles in both the central zone (24a) and the edge zone (24b) of the coverage area (24). The first mobile-link assembly (16) receives uplink signals from both the central zone (24a) and the edge zone (24b) whilst the second mobile-link assembly (18) only receives uplink signals from mobiles in the edge zone (24b) of the coverage area (24). In this manner the first mobile-link assembly (16) and the second mobile-link assembly (18) provide diversity reception of edge uplink signals transmitted from mobile stations located in the edge zone (24b).
