Abstract: A method and system that detects protocol and configuration messages in a PPP packet without having to unframe the entire packet. The method includes a communication device that receives a plurality data frames, wherein the communication device is capable of ascertaining the beginning of an information portion within the received frames. The communications device detects whether the information portion contains configuration information, such as protocol and configuration messages of a predetermined type. In a first embodiment, the detection is achieved by the communication device unescaping the contents of a plurality of bytes and determining whether the escaped bytes contains the desired configuration information. In a second embodiment, the communication device determines whether the contents of a particular byte contain the desired configuration information, in escaped or unescaped form, and the communication device continues to sequentially process the bytes within the information portion until the bytes typically containing the desired configuration information are processed.

Abstract: The packets generated by each of multiple packet data applications are provided to a single Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) stack and a single High-level Data Link Control (HDLC) framing layer to convert data packets into byte streams suitable for transmission through Radio Link Protocol (RLP) connections. Each of the resultant multiple byte streams is then provided to one of multiple RLP connections having different retransmission and delay properties. The RLP connection selected for sending data from each application is based on the grade of service most appropriate for the application. At the receiver, the data from the multiple RLP connections is provided to a single PPP stack.

Abstract: A system and method for transparent Mobile IP registration within PPP negotiation uses a mobile telephone to relay messages between terminal equipment and a Foreign Agent (FA). An IPCP configuration request message by the terminal equipment requesting the assignment of an IP address is modifie d by the mobile telephone to delete the IP address request option. Other configuration options are forwarded unchanged by the mobile telephone to the peer/network. The peer/network responds with an acknowledgement of the requested configuration options and flow control between the terminal and th e MT is asserted to permit Mobile IP registration. In the course of Mobile IP registration, and IP address is assigned to the mobile unit by the FA. Upon completion of the Mobile IP registration, flow control between the mobile telephone and the terminal is deasserted and the IP address assigned during Mobile IP registration is provided to the terminal equipment. In addition, t he previously requested options may also be acknowledged.

Abstract: A mobile packet network call is established over a transmission link, extending between a mobile terminal device and a given interworking function. The transmission link connects the mobile terminal device to a wireless communication device over a first interface and further connects the wireless communication device to the given interworking function over a second interface via a wireless link to a base station. The transmission link further comprises a packet mode in which the traffic channel is up and a dormant mode in which the traffic channel is down while the data link layer link and the network layer link are maintained. Network region identifier information is provided to the wireless communication device. The wireless communication device determines when the given interworking function has changed from a first interworking function to a second interworking function by determining when there is a corresponding change in the network region identifier information. The wireless communication device initiates a link control protocol renegotiation with the mobile terminal device when the corresponding change in the network region identifier information has been determined. The mobile terminal device responds to the initiation of the link control protocol, and causes the transmission link to enter the packet mode, and to bring up the traffic channel. The data link layer link is then established with the second interworking function. The mobile terminal device and the second interworking function then negotiate network control protocol options and establish a network layer link. If the second interworking function corresponds to a new foreign agent, the mobile terminal device will then update its IP mobility registration.

Abstract: A system and method for invoking the performance of mobile node registration in a wireless communication network. The system comprises a terminal device for transmitting and receiving packetized data and a communication device coupled to the terminal device. The communication device monitors the packetized data for an Internet Protocol (IP) address contained in an IP address request. If the IP address request is for a static IP address the communication device waits for network movement information. Based on the received network movement information, the communication device solicits network address information. Upon receipt of the network address information, the terminal device then initiates Mobile Node registration. As a result, the Mobile Node registration is automatically invoked whenever the terminal device changes its network point-of-attachment.

Abstract: A method and a wireless communication device (MT2) for simultaneously negotiating LCP or IPCP configuration options over both the Rm and the Um interfaces. When the MT2 device receives either an LCP or an IPCP Configure-Request packet over one of the Rm or the Um interfaces, the MT2 device parses the requested configuration options and determines whether the requested options are supported by the MT2 device. If the requested options are supported, the MT2 device saves a Configure-Request ID, included in the Configure-Request packet, and frames the Configure-Request packet in a PPP frame for transmission on the other of the Rm or the Um interfaces. If any of the requested configuration options are not supported by the MT2 device, the MT2 device creates a Configure-Reject packet, including the unsupported options, and frames the Configure-Reject packet in a PPP frame for transmission over the interface through which it received the Configure-Request packet.

Abstract: A system and method for performing mobile node registration. The system comprises a terminal device for transmitting packetized data, and a wireless communication device coupled to said terminal device for monitoring said packetized data for an Internet Protocol (IP) address contained in an IP address request. The wireless communication device initiates mobile node registration using said IP address if said IP address request is for a static IP address. The wireless communication device prevents the terminal device from sending or receiving packetized data when initiating mobile node registration, and allows said terminal device to send and received packetized data upon completion of mobile node registration. As a result, the mobile node registration occurs transparently to the terminal device, obviating the need for the terminal device to have its own Mobile IP support.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for allowing a mobile station (110) in a wireless network to perform network authentication in association with mobile packet data services. The packet data serving node (PDSN) does not authenticate the mobile station with an authentication server prior to sending a CHAP success message. Rather, a mobile station is authenticated via an authentication server after the PDSN (130) receives an IPCP message indicating whether the mobile station desires to use Mobile IP in the current session. If the mobil e station (110) desires to use Mobile IP, the PDSN (130) uses authentication techniques in accordance with Mobile IP protocols. In the preferred embodiment, if the mobile station (110) does not desire to use Mobile IP, th e PDSN (130) authenticates the mobile station querying an authentication serve r with the buffered contents of a previously received CHAP challenge response.
