    Abstract: In a collapsible top hat which can be used as a novelty item or for formal wear, elongated plastic support members are attached between the brim and the crown of the hat along the riser, each of the support members having a medial hinge formed by a transverse slit so that they can swing apart or fold together as the hat is extended and collapsed and an attached resilient member to snap and hold the support member in the swung apart or folded condition when the hat is extended or collapsed.

    Abstract: A precipitation protecting device that may be configured as a wide brimmed hat, or as an umbrella like covering. The device is movable from a collapsed, low volume configuration in which it is easily transported or stored, to a deployed configuration in which it well protects a user's head and upper body. A covering of flexible material, which may be transparent, has a relatively rigid perimeter defined by a plurality of distinct rigid tubular elongated support members. The support members may be tubular, or may be bars or other solid structures. An elastic structure, such as an elastic band, operatively connects the support members so that they are movable from the low volume configuration in which the members are generally side-by-side, to the deployed configuration in which adjacent elements are connected end-to-end to define a relatively rigid perimeter for the flexible covering. When used as a hat, the flexible covering is connected to a wearer's head by a headband, straps, or the like, at a central portion of the flexible covering. In an umbrella embodiment, a handle engages a central portion of one side of the flexible covering, the handle being unconnected to the relatively rigid perimeter.

    Abstract: Ribs are stacked and are joined pivotally at inner ends. A flexible connector sequentially joins outer ends, permitting the ribs to be spread as radii in a complete circle. Releaseable fasteners connect outer sections of upper and lower ribs to complete a circular form. Ribs are bent downward to form top and sides of a crown and are bent outward to form a brim. A sheet covers outer portions of the ribs forming a brim. In a sport cap configuration, upper and lower ribs are shortened so that the brim directionally extends from a crown as a beak.

    Abstract: This is a roll up hat in which provision is made on the hat itself by means of snap fastener elements to hold the hat in its rolled up condition and so that it can be stored in a small space. Cooperating snap fastener elements are respectively provided upon opposite sides of the hat and upon the band. The hat is collapsed along the forward and rearward edges and one of the snap fastener elements is located on one side of the hat adjacent to the rear edge and the other snap fastener element is located on the other side of the hat intermediate the front and rear edge. To secure the hat when it is rolled, the sides of the hat are collapsed upon one another and the end of the hat bearing the respective cooperative fastener elements are rolled from opposite directions until the fastener elements are aligned with one another so as to be joined. The snap fastener elements are then readily joined together and as a result the hat is kept rolled from the opposite directions and will take up little space when stored.
