Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and structure for joining members, suitable for reinforcing a shaped material. SOLUTION: An auxiliary member 7 is inserted into holes 9a, 9b, provided at a first place 8a and a second place 8b of a main member 6 such that the forward end of the auxiliary member penetrates through the second place 8b and the base end of the auxiliary member projects outward from the first place 8a. While being rotated, a joining tool 5 is pressed to the forward end of the auxiliary member 7 to soften it by friction heat and plastic flow. Then, the softened material of the auxiliary member 7 is deformed and forced from the hole 9b into the inner side of the main member 6, the joining tool 5 is removed from the main member 6, and the plastic flow portion of the auxiliary member 7 is allowed to solidify. Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for friction stir welding a stainless steel panel to an extruded aluminum alloy shape member. SOLUTION: A side structure 2 of a car body 1 is formed by friction stir welding aluminum alloy extruded hollow shape members 30, 40 from the inner side of the car. On the outer side of the side structure 2, stainless steel panels 10, 20 are welded by the friction stir welding to the butted portion between hollow shape members 30, 40 from the inner side of the car. After friction stir welding the butted portion between the hollow shape members 30, 40, inner face plates 31, 41 of the hollow shape members 30, 40 are connected via a connecting member 51. According to the present method, scratches on the surface of the car body can be reduced by arranging the stainless steel panels 10, 20 on the outer side of the car. Except parts of the stainless steel panels 10, 20, the structure is made of aluminum alloy and can be manufactured in light weight and at low cost.
