Abstract:
Compositions and methods for treating metal substrates and/or bonding metal substrates to polymeric materials, such as rubber, are provided. The compositions include at least one substantially hydrolyzed amino silane and at least one substantially hydrolyzed sulfur-containing silane Optionally, the compositions include a nano-size particulate material. The compositions provide coatings on metal substrates for protecting the metal from corrosion and for adhering rubber-like polymeric compositions to the metal with polymer-to-metal vulcanization conditions less dependent on the coating thickness, and with use of less coating materials.
Abstract:
Organofunctional silanes are applied to metal surfaces using an oil bath. Metal is immersed in an oil bath containing approximately 2% silane and an oil dispersible hygroscopic liquid, such as glycerol. In one embodiment, the metal is a tire cord. Water vapor entrained in a carrier gas can also be bubbled into the oil silane bath.
Abstract:
A rope comprising a plurality of high tenacity polyolefin yarns aligned in a substantially uniaxial direction along the length of the rope. The rope yarns are substantially untwisted and are substantially parallel to each other. The yarns are formed from a plurality of fibers aligned in a substantially uniaxial direction along the length of the yarns, with the fibers being substantially untwisted and being substantially parallel to each other. The fibers comprise high tenacity polyolefin fibers. Adjacent yarns are connected together by contact of their respective resin surface coatings.
Abstract:
A method of depositing a solute (34) on a metal thread (4), comprising the steps of: depositing a liquid solution (3), formed from a volatile solvent and said solute (34), on the thread (4); and then rapidly raising the temperature of the thread (4) to a temperature above the vaporization temperature of the solvent so as to vaporize the solvent placed in contact with the surface of said thread (4) and to form vapour bubbles (32) which, by expanding, generate a pressure pulse that ejects the liquid (33) remaining on the periphery of the thread.
Abstract:
An improved rope is formed from high tenacity fibers, preferably a blend of high tenacity polyethylene fibers with aramid fibers and/or liquid crystal copolyester fibers. The fibers and/or the rope are coated with a composition comprising an amino functional silicone resin and a neutralized low molecular weight polyethylene. The ropes are useful in marine applications, such as in deep sea lifting, and have improved cyclic bend over sheave fatigue resistance.

An improved rope is formed from high tenacity polyolefin fibers, such as extended chain polyethylene fibers. The fibers and/or the rope are coated with a composition comprising an amino functional silicone resin and a neutralized low molecular weight polyethylene. The ropes are useful in marine applications, such as in deep sea lifting. The ropes have improved cyclic bend over sheave fatigue resistance.
Abstract:
A steel cord-rubber composite is provided, that has improved initial adhesion property and adhesion property against aging between the steel cord and the rubber composition with improved manufacturing cost efficiency. A steel cord-rubber composition composite includes a coating layer and a steel cord, and the coating layer includes an inner coating layer formed of a rubber composition containing a rubber component, a cobalt compound and sulfur and directly covering the steel cord, and an outer coating layer formed of a rubber composition of which contents of cobalt compound and sulfur are smaller than those of the inner coating layer and coating the outer portion of the inner coating layer.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a composite cord (10) for reinforcement of elastomers comprising a core (12) of a high polymer material, a first layer of steel filaments (14) twisted around said core and a second layer of steel filaments (16) twisted around said first layer. The polymer material is present in a sufficient volume to create gaps between adjacent filaments of the first layer and possibly also between the filaments of the second layer. The composite cord is characterized by a decreased fretting of the steel filaments.
Abstract:
A composite abrasive filament, including at least one preformed core at least partially coated with a hardened, abrasive-filled thermoplastic elastomer, exhibits increased abrading life over previously known abrasive filaments. Also disclosed are methods of making such filaments and using such filaments in article form to abrade a variety of workpieces.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for extruding a thin uniform coating of fluent plastic material about a continuously advancing strand wherein the fluent plastic material is directed radially toward the strand through a constricted annular feed passage. The strand with the fluent plastic material adhering thereto is then advanced through a passageway conically converging to an exit end and effective to develop hydrodynamic pressure forces which center the strand within the passageway.
