The user interaction system comprises a portable pointing device (101) connected to a camera (102) and sending pictures to a digital signal processor (120), capable of recognizing an object (130) and a command given by the user (100) by moving the pointing device (101) in a specific way, and controlling an electrical apparatus (110) on the basis of this recognition. (Characteristic) pattern generation means (116) can be included in the system for facilitating object recognition.
Abstract:
A method for transferring information to a remote control includes storing information in a transfer medium, inserting the transfer medium into a remote control that may or may not have already been programmed with information of the same type as that in the transfer medium, inputting the information from the transfer medium, and storing the information from the transfer medium in memory. Another embodiment of the method transfers information between remote controls. A remote control includes a processor, memory, and a transfer medium port. The processor is responsive to a data signal and the port is adapted to receive a transfer medium with information to be transferred to the remote control. The processor stores the information in memory. The remote control may also download information which is to be transferred to other remote controls into the transfer medium and the transfer medium may be reused to program additional remote controls.

Die personalisierbare Fernsteuerung zur Steuerung von interaktiven multimedialen Geräten, insbesondere einer Set-Top-Box weist eine erste Hardwareeinrichtung, insbesondere einen Fingerabdruckleser (15) auf, mit dem authorisierte Personen eindeutig identifizierbar sind. Weiter weist die Fernsteuerung eine zweite Hardwareeinrichtung, vorzugsweise ein Lesegerät für eine SIM-Karte (20) auf, zur eindeutigen Identifizierung der Fernsteuerung. Damit ist sichergestellt, daß nur authorisierte Fernsteuerungen mit der Set-Top-Box kommunizieren und diese steuern können und weiter, daß Neueingabe oder Änderungen von Benutzerdaten authorisierter Personen nur mit der zweiten Einrichtung, insbesondere der SIM-Karte (16) vorgenommen werden können.

The first set of access codes provided to the wireless device (32) may expire. Actuating a security system (30) may also include providing expiration dates for each of the first set of access codes provided to the wireless device (32) . Actuating a security system (30) may also include examining each of the expiration dates and, in response to a particular expiration date being prior to a current date, erasing from the wireless device (32) a particular one of the first set of access codes that corresponds to the particular expiration date.

A remote control device is which key use is monitored is shown in Figure 1. A command key (10), representative of an appliance function, may be correlated to a target appliance (12) that is determined, as a function of the monitored key use, to be the most likely intended recipient of a command to perform that appliance function. An activity key may also be programmed so as to perform a series of actions that are representative of a sequence of monitored key uses.

A control unit (1) consisting of a touch-sensitive keypad (2), a display (8) and an operating system. Said unit (1) has a slot for a smart card (3) used to activate the unit (1). The keypad (2) comprises a number of touch-sensitive keys (13) made of transparent material so that the underlying inserted smart card (3) is visible. The back surface of the smart card (3) contacting the keypad (2) includes a set of customised indicia (14) each corresponding to one touch-sensitive key (13) on the keypad (2), and each of the smart card indicia (14) that can be seen through the transparent keys (13) of the keypad (2) represents the function assigned to the corresponding key (13) by the smart card (3) so that the unit (1) can be used in a variety of settings. Said unit is useful for remotely controlling electrical equipment and/or providing information to users.
