Abstract: 1366055 Pressure-sensitive record sheet NATIONAL CASH REGISTER CO 1 Jan 1973 [24 Jan 1972] 13/73 Heading D2B A pressure-sensitive record sheet comprises a base sheet having a coating of pressure rupturable polymeric material containing minute, discrete, inclusions of an oily marking liquid, and a porous fibrous web overlying and adhesively bound to the coating, the thickness of the web and the viscosity of the oily liquid being so chosen as to allow passage of the oily liquid through the web when and where the polymeric material is ruptured by pressure. The oily marking liquid may be coloured or substantially colourless but chromogenic. The liquid may be contained in microcapsules or evenly distributed in a polymeric coating. The porous, fibrous, overlying web may be a sheet of tissue paper and the base sheet may be a plastics film, paper or a substrate coated with a latex or resinous material. The overlying web may be bound to the coating of pressurerupturable polymeric material by a binder e.g. cooked starch, or gelatin glue, or by the inherent adhesiveness of the polymeric coating when wet. Typical inks comprise crystal violet lactone and benzoyl leuco methylene blue in a mixture of chlorinated biphenyl and refined paraffin oil, or in a mixture of isopropylbiphenyl and refined paraffin oil.

Abstract: Improved print speed and image intensity are obtained in a pressure-sensitive record sheet material by incorporating a cross-linked urea-formaldehyde agglomerated resin pigment in the coated surface of the acid-reacting sheet. A typical formulation of the coating comprises kaolin clay, a zinc-modified phenol-formaldehyde resin, said urea-formaldehyde resin pigment and a suitable binder. When contacted under pressure with a surface containing microscopic rupturable capsules of a colorless chromogeneous material, a colored mark is formed by transfer of the colorless chromogeneous material to the acidic pigment coating.

Abstract: A process is disclosed for performing encapsulation, en masse, by an in situ polymerization reaction to yield capsule wall material. The polymerization comprises a reaction between melamine and formaldehyde and/or polycondensation of monomeric methylol melamine or etherified methylol melamine, or a low molecular weight polymer thereof, in an aqueous vehicle and the reaction is conducted in the presence of negatively-charged, carboxyl-substituted, linear aliphatic hydrocarbon polyelectrolyte material dissolved in the vehicle. Liquid-liquid phase separation is accomplished and maintained by increase in the molecular weight of the resulting condensation polymer without further dilution of the manufacturing vehicle. The negatively-charged polyelectrolyte material is required and has an apparent effect of controlling or modifying the polymerization reaction. The disclosed encapsulation process permits manufacture of micro-capsules in concentrations of capsule to capsule manufacturing vehicle higher than previously possible.

Abstract: A substantially colorless marking liquid, particularly for use in pressure-sensitive record material, comprising (a) a colorless chromogenic material, (b) a solvent for said chromogenic material and (c) an additive for controlling CB decline. The additive for controlling CB decline, i.e., controlling the capability of the CB sheet to produce an image of satisfactory intensity even after exposure of the CB coating to light, includes certain chromogenic materials such as Pyridyl Blue and phenol derivatives having a free reactive (ortho- or para-) position. The marking liquid helps to prevent CB decline in, for example, carbonless copy paper, a long-standing problem in the art.
