Abstract:
A compressor includes orbiting and non-orbiting scroll members meshingly engaged to form a series of compression pockets, including first pockets when the orbiting scroll member is in a first position. A first porting in the non-orbiting scroll member communicates with the first pockets during a portion of a compression cycle. The first pockets include a set of radially outermost pockets located radially inward relative to the first porting and isolated from communication with the first porting during the compression cycle. The first porting is aligned with a spiral wrap of the orbiting scroll member at a location radially outward from and directly adjacent the first pockets when the orbiting scroll member is in the first position. Additional porting communicates with each of the compression pockets located radially outward relative to the first pockets when the orbiting scroll member is in the first position.
Abstract:
A compressor includes a first porting extending through an end plate of an orbiting scroll member at an angular extent of at least twenty degrees and first and second spiral wraps defining modulated capacity pockets when the orbiting scroll is in a first position. The first modulated capacity pockets may include a set of radially outermost compression pockets located radially inward relative to the first porting and isolated from communication with the first porting during an entirety of the compression cycle. The first porting may align with the second spiral wrap at a location radially outward from and directly adjacent the first modulated capacity pockets when the orbiting scroll member is in the first position.
Abstract:
A compressor includes a housing, a first scroll member supported within the housing and having a first end plate with a discharge passage, and a second scroll member supported within the housing and having a second end plate with a second spiral wrap extending therefrom and meshingly engaged with the first spiral wrap to form a series of pockets. A first aperture extends through the first end plate and is in communication with a first product of the series of pockets. A modulation assembly axially biases the first scroll member into engagement with the second scroll member when the first aperture is in communication with a suction pressure region of the compressor.
Abstract:
A system and method for calculating parameters for a refrigeration system having a variable speed compressor is provided. A compressor is connected to a condenser and an evaporator. An evaporator sensor outputs an evaporator signal corresponding to at least one of an evaporator pressure and an evaporator temperature. An inverter drive modulates electric power delivered to the compressor to modulate a speed of the compressor. The control module is connected to the inverter drive and receives the evaporator signal, monitors electrical power data and compressor speed data from said inverter drive, and calculates at least one of a condenser temperature and a condenser pressure based on the evaporator signal, the electrical power data, and the compressor speed data.
Abstract:
A support member for a compressor having a shell may include a hub receiving a load from the compressor, at least three spokes radially extending from the hub, and at least three attachment locations attaching the at least three spokes to the shell. The support member may further include at least one connecting portion extending between at least two of the at least three spokes to transmit a load between the at least two spokes, whereby the at least one connecting portion is spaced apart and separated from the shell.
Abstract:
A compressor comprising a shell, a compression mechanism disposed within the shell, a drive shaft for operating the compression mechanism, and a motor for driving the drive shaft. A terminal is secured to the shell for delivering electric current to at least one of the compression mechanism and the motor. A terminal block is engaged with the terminal, and a wire carries the electric current from the terminal and the terminal block. A wire retainer located relative to the compression mechanism supports the wire in a predetermined orientation within the shell.
Abstract:
An apparatus includes a first optocoupler and a control module. The first optocoupler selectively allows a first current to flow from a first one of a first pair of N power supply lines to a second one of the first pair. N is an integer greater than two. The N power supply lines each provide a phase signal. The control module controls the first optocoupler and determines an occurrence of a phase failure of the phase signals based on a first signal, which is based on the first current.
Abstract:
A compressor monitoring system includes current and voltage monitors, current and voltage averaging modules, a control module, and a switch. The current monitor measures a current drawn by a motor of a compressor. The current averaging module generates first and second average current values based on the current measured by the current monitor. The voltage monitor measures a utility power voltage. The voltage averaging module generates first and second average voltage values based on the voltage measured by the voltage monitor. The control module selectively generates a fault signal when a first ratio is greater than a first predetermined threshold and a second ratio is less than a second predetermined threshold. The first ratio is based on the first and second average current values. The second ratio is based on the first and second average voltage values. The switch deactivates the motor when the fault signal is generated.

Abstract:
A sensor module for a compressor, having an electric motor operating at a first voltage, the sensor module operating at a second voltage, is provided. The sensor module includes a plurality of inputs connected to a plurality of sensors that generate a plurality of operating signals associated with operating conditions of the compressor. A processor is connected to the plurality of inputs and records multiple operating condition measurements from the plurality of operating signals. A communication port is connected to the processor for communicating said operating condition measurements to a control module that controls the compressor. The processor is disposed within an electrical enclosure of the compressor, the electrical enclosure being configured to house electrical terminals for connecting a power supply to the electric motor. The second voltage is less than said first voltage.
