Abstract: PURPOSE: To prevent the deterioration under the molding temperature of hydrogel by sealing a specific amount of hydrogel into a cavity of a mold having a surface state of a lens to liquefy the same, then cooling the hydrogel in the mold to gelify the same, bringing the hydrogel into contact with a cross- linking agent to crosslink the same. CONSTITUTION: The hydrogel is prepared by hydrating the protein polymer. Then a lens preform is made from the hydrogel at a temperature between ambient temperature and liquefying temperature of the polymer (50-80 deg.C), and the preform is placed in the mold made of a low-loss dielectric material. The mold comprises at least two parts which define a three-dimensional shape and a finished lens surface state. Then the hydrogel is liquefied by irradiating the mold with the electromagnetic field at a frequency between 10 -10 Hz for 5-45 seconds, then gelified by cooling the mold, and crosslinked by contact with a cross-linking agent. The hydrogel is exposed to the liquefying temperature only for a very short time during the molding process of the contact lens, so that the composition and the properties thereof are hardly deteriorated during the manufacturing of one lot of contact lenses.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To obtain excellent visual comfortableness whatever the diopter entry value of a lens is by constituting the surface of the lens of an area for far sight, an area for middle sight, and an area for near sight and determining the curvature of the principal meridian by a specific variance rule. CONSTITUTION: A surface S of a lens L consists of a visual field area VL for far sight, a visual field area VI for middle sight, and a visual field area VP for near sight. The curvature of the area VI is increased upward along a principal meridional curve MP. A curve C1 as the boundary between areas VI and VP crosses the curve MP at a point A2. Similarly, a curve C2 as the boundary between areas VI and VP crosses the curve MP at a point A2. The curvature of the curve MP starts changing at a point A3, which is a distance d1=f(A) off the point A2, in the area VI and is changed in the same direction up to a point A4, which is a distance d2=h(A) off the point A2, also in the area VP. The difference between curvatures at points A2 and A4 is denoted as ▵C=g(A). These functions f(A), h(A), and g(A) are reduction functions of a diopter entry value A of the lens between points A1 and A2.

Abstract: The peripheral edge of an ophthalmic lens is maintained in contact with a bevelling or grooving wheel while being rotated about an axis of the lens parallel to the axis of the bevelling wheel whereby a bevel or groove is formed in said peripheral edge. The ophthalmic lens is capable of relative axial displacement relative to said bevelling wheel. By way of a force or displacement sensor, the relative axial position of the ophthalmic lens with respect to the bevelling wheel can be made subject to the axial component of reaction forces generated between the lens and the bevelling wheel in their mutual contact zone.
