    Abstract: A surface cleaning apparatus comprises a surface cleaning head 108, an upper portion 104 moveably mounted to the surface cleaning head, the upper portion comprising an interior and a cleaning head electrical engagement 1042 member provided within the interior, a portable surface cleaning unit removably mounted to the upper portion, a cleaning wand 180 having a lower end that includes a wand electrical engagement member 1038 removably receivable in the interior, a wand lock having a locked position and an unlocked position in which the wand is removable from the upper portion and an electrified flexible air flow conduit electrically connecting the wand to the surface cleaning head when the lower end of the wand is received in the interior. The surface cleaning apparatus is operable in a floor cleaning configuration in which the portable surface cleaning unit is mounted to the upper portion and an above floor cleaning configuration in which the lower end of the wand is removed from the interior and, in the floor cleaning configuration. In the locked position, the wand is secured to the upper portion.

    Abstract: A method of recycling a mixed plastics waste comprises introducing into an extruder a feedstock comprising a first plastics material having a first melting point and, a second plastics material having a second melting point higher than the first melting point. The feedstock is passed through a barrel of an extruder where the barrel has a working volume containing an extruder screw through which the feedstock passes where the temperature of the feedstock in the working volume is above the first melting point and below the second melting point. An extrudate is extruded from the barrel. The extrudate comprises the first plastics material in a liquid state and the second plastics material in a solid state, the rate of rotation of the extruder screw being adjusted to maintain the temperature in the working volume above the first melting point and below the second melting point. The first plastics material may comprise up to 20% by weight of the feedstock. The first plastics may be low density polyethylene (LDPE) and the second plastics material may be high density polyethylene (HDPE). A non-plastics material may be contained in the mixed plastics, which may be a metal.

    Abstract: A hand vacuum cleaner has an air flow path extending from a dirty air inlet to a clean air outlet. An air treatment member and suction motor are positioned in the air flow path. The hand vacuum cleaner includes an onboard energy storage unit and has a pistol grip handle. When the hand vacuum cleaner is oriented with its upper end above its lower end, the pistol grip handle is located at the rear end of the hand vacuum cleaner, the energy storage unit is located at the lower end of the hand vacuum cleaner with the suction motor located above the front end of the energy storage unit and the pistol grip handle located above the rear end of the energy storage unit. A finger grip area may be provided between the handle and the suction motor above the energy storage unit.

    Abstract: A hand vacuum cleaner has two nested cyclonic stages. Various designs for the dirt collection chamber of the second cyclonic stage and the design of multiple second stage cyclone inlets, which may use directing members, are provided. A length of the second stage cyclone chamber may be shorter than a length of the first stage cyclone chamber. A screen may be positioned laterally outwardly from the second stage cyclone to define a passage positioned between an inner side of the screen and the outer wall of the second stage cyclone wherein the screen may extend axially at least about 70% of a length of the second stage cyclone chamber. Different designs for emptying first and second stage dirt collect ion chambers are also provided.
