    Abstract: In a recirculating linear accelerator system of the racetrack type the beam path consists of two shorter straight legs 12 and two longer straight legs 11 with four Pretzel beam-bending magnets 13 disposed one each at the corners of the beam path. The magnets may each bend the beam through 90 DEG , as shown, or through 84 DEG , in which case the two longer legs cross over one another (Figure 2, not shown). Two linear accelerators are disposed either as shown, or two in one leg (Figure 2). The beam is injected from a high voltage gun 20 via one of the magnets such that the axis of the injected beam lies at a tangent to the normal trajectory of a beam of similar energy in the magnet. The beam emerges by way of one of the magnets which is arranged in back-to-back double Pretzel configuration with a fifth Pretzel magnet 16.

    Abstract: 900,838. Rectifying. RADIATION DYNAMICS Inc. July 28, 1958, No. 24290/58. Class 38 (2). A voltage multiplication apparatus comprises a cascade arrangement of rectifiers and capacitances, the rectifiers V 1 , V 2 . . . V 36 being seriesconnected and their anode cathode junctions being connected to corona shields CS1, CS2 . . . CS81, the arrangement being disposed between shields E1, E2. As shown in Fig. 6, the arrangement is supplied with R.F. current from a tapped portion of a winding I whose ends I 1 , I 2 are connected to the shields E1, E2. The output is obtained from a high-voltage terminal HVD and applied to the cathode of an electron source in an accelerator tube AT. Inter-electrode capacitances CV1 . . . CV36 and intershield capacitances CES1-CES19 are shown dotted. The effect of the capacitances CES1- CES19 terminating on shields E1, E2 rather than at the grounded container 1 provides an higher output voltage. As shown in Fig. 6 conventional cascade capacitors CCA, CC1 . . . CC16 are provided. In a modification (Figs. 7 and 8, not shown) these are eliminated, being effectively replaced by capacitances CES1- CES19. In a further modification, Fig. 9, the rectifiers are disposed end-to-end and the capacitances provided by cylindrical hollow corona shields CSC-CSG, EIA, EIB, EIC, E2A, E2B, the interspaces being filled with a suitable gaseous, liquid or solid dielectric to provide the desired capacitance values. The rectifier units may be of the germanium, silicon, copper oxide or selenium types or vacuum or gas-filled tubes. The winding I is preferably toroidal in form and resonates with associates interelectrode capacitances at the supply frequency.

    Abstract: Apparatus and method for protectively covering coupled components, such as in a coaxial cable splice, with a sleeve wherein one of the covered components is damaged when subjected to excessive heat which is less than that required for heat recovery. A sealed bond is formed between a first length of the sleeve and a heat damageable component by heating and thereby foaming a foamable adhesive therebetween, the heat being insufficient to melt or otherwise damage the heat damageable component. A second length of the sleeve is heat shrunk into engagement with another of the coupled components which is not damageable at heat recovery temperatures. Initially, the second length has a cross-sectional dimension that is preferably larger than that of the first length, the second length being heat shrinkable to cover components of varying cross-sections. Sleeves according to the invention are formed by various techniques, including extruding or blowmolding a tube of heat recoverable material.
