Abstract:
Osmotic absorbents which possess the ability to absorb liquids to a high degree comprise encapsulated semipermeable polymeric membrane shells containing therein a high osmolality promoter, the ratio of polymer to promoter being in a range of from about 2:1 to about 1:10. The absorbents may be characterized by a shell of cellulose acetate having sodium chloride contained therein.
Abstract:
An aluminum based metal matrix composite is produced from a charge containing a rapidly solidifed aluminum alloy and particles of a reinforcing material present in an amount ranging from about 0.1 to 50 percent by volume of the charge. The charge is ball milled energetically to enfold metal matrix material around each of the particles while maintaining the charge in a pulverant state. Upon completion of the ball milling step, the charge is consolidated to provide a powder compact having a formable, substantially void free mass. The mass is then subject to a heat treatment during which it is solutionized at a temperature above the solvus temperature of the alloy, quenched and age hardened at a temperature below the solvus temperature of the allow to promote precipitation of a primary strenthening Al3(Li, Zr) phase and to precipitate substantially all of the Al3(Li, Zr) phase into the metal matrix. The composite is especially suited for use in aerospace, automotive, electronic, wear resistance critical components and the like.
Abstract:
Methods for metering fluid flow and apparatus adapted for use with the methods. The apparatus (5) comprises an electrohydraulic solenoid (6) secured to and in fluid communication with a metering valve body (8). A cylindrical spool (15) is disposed in a channel (16) formed in the valve body (8), and variably blocks a flow path (74, 90, 75) extending through the valve body in response to variations in fluid pressure in a chamber (68) which is defined by the solenoid (6), the valve body (8), and the spool (15). Fluid is delivered to and vented from the chamber (68) through the solenoid (6), and the pressure in the chamber varies with the duty cycle of pulses communicated to the solenoid (6).
Abstract:
A one piece seal (42) having a resilient body (100) with a peripheral surface (102) on which first and second ribs (104 and 106) engage a housing (19) to establish static seals to prevent environmental air from entering a control chamber (22) and an inner surface (114) with first and second dynamic seals (120 and 128) located adjacent first and second bearing lands (116 and 118). The first and second dynamic seals (120 and 128) which surround a movable projection (38) flex to allow the projection (38) relatively radial movement while the bearing lands (116 and 118) to retain the projection (38) in axial alignment during lateral movement of the wall (24).
Abstract:
This invention relates to a process for reducing the ignition temperature of diesel soot. The process comprises contacting a hot exhaust from a diesel engine, which exhaust contains diesel soot, at combustion conditions, with a catalytic composite comprising a particulate filter coated with a sulfur resistant refractory inorganic oxide support selected from the group consisting of titania, zirconia, alumina treated with titania or zirconia and mixtures thereof, which support has deposited thereon at least one catalytic element or compound selected from the group consisting of Pt, Pd, Rh and mixtures thereof.
Abstract:
A method is provided for decreasing radiative heat transfer and adjustably limiting visible light and near infrared radiation transfer and glare through a window. The method comprises the steps of: (a) mounting within a frame of the window a plurality of spaced window panes, a first and second of the panes having opposing faces; (b) assembling between the opposing faces a conductive polymer cell, the cell having a first wall composed of a transparent conductive layer affixed to the first pane and having deposited thereupon an electroactive electro-optically responsive conductive polymer, and a second wall comprised of a transparent conductive layer coated on the second pane, the layer being optionally coated with a second electro-optically responsive polymer, the first and second walls delimiting a cavity containing an ion-conducting electrolyte which contacts opposing surfaces of the first and second walls, and (c) applying a potential between the first and second walls to provide a selected light transmittance upon passage of current therebetween.
Abstract:
An optical flame detector is provided, suitable for sensing by sensing module (1) flame-out in the afterburner of a gas turbine aircraft engine. A phosphor (9) senses the UV radiation emanating from the flame, and in response thereto emits radiation in the visible region. The visible radiation is sensed by detector module (2); its absence is used to trigger fuel flow shut-off to the afterburner.
Abstract:
A connection for press fitting and securing together a reservoir (40) to a master cylinder housing (10) comprises a master cylinder housing extension (12) having an end (14) with an exterior abutment (16) and an enlarged interior diameter section (20) which provides a shoulder (22). An annular seal (30) is received within the enlarged interior diameter section (20) with a flat edge (34) of the seal (30) engaging the shoulder (22) and extending radially inwardly relative to the housing extension (12). A retainer member (50) is annular shaped and includes a horizontal portion (52) with a central opening (54), the horizontal portion (52) extending into a substantially orthogonally disposed side portion (56) that has a plurality of curved fingers (58). The retainer member (50) is snap fitted over end (14) of the housing extension (12) so that the fingers (58) resiliently engage the exterior abutment (16) and the horizontal portion (52) retains the seal (30) within the enlarged interior diameter section (20). A reservoir abutment (48) on a reservoir extension (42) engages the flat edge of the seal (30) so that the retainer member (50) retains the seal (30) and reservoir extension (42) within the housing extension (12).
Abstract:
The electrically operated drum brake (10) comprises an electric motor assembly (80, 180) disposed between opposing ends (62, 72) of two brake shoes (12, 14), the electric motor assembly (80, 180) replacing both the hydraulic wheel cylinder and the parking brake strut and lever. The electric motor assembly (80, 180) comprises a housing (82, 182) having an interior opening (84, 184) in which is disposed an electric motor (86, 186). The electric motor (86) drives a planetary gear assembly (91) which operates a screw mechanism (102) that engages an end (72) of an adjacent brake shoe (14), the housing (82) engaging the other brake shoe (12). An alternative embodiment includes an electric motor (186) which drives a bearing drive member (198), the bearing drive member (198) having a bearing track (200) which receives a plurality of bearing balls (205). The bearing balls (205) engage a fixed bearing track (187) on the housing (182) and also a curved surface (202) on a rotatable bearing member (201). The rotatable bearing member (201) engages a screw mechanism (204) so that when rotation of the bearing balls (205) causes rotation of the rotatable bearing member (201), the screw mechanism (204) is displaced against a brake shoe (14) and, by reaction, the housing (182) is displaced against the other brake shoe (12).
Abstract:
There are described vinyl ether terminated ester oligomers are disclosed which cure or polymerize particularly rapidly, especially by cationic polymerization which is radiation induced in the presence of an onium salt. The ester oligomeric units are formed by the reaction of a dicarboxylic acid with a diol, although esters with triols and higher polyhydric polyols also are useful especially where an extensively cross-linked product is desired to produce carboxyl-terminated oligomeric esters. These are then esterified with vinyl ether terminated alcohols which can be thought of as the adducts of alkynes and polyols, especially diols.
