Abstract: The soft state of a header compression scheme in a communication system carrying packet traffic including a real time communication signal can be updated (63) during periods of communication signal inactivity (62), during which there is no need to transmit the communication signal. The header compression soft state can also be updated by stealing bits (83, 84) from the communication signal to carry the header update information (73). If the communication signal includes source encoded data, the header compression soft state can be updated selectively (126) based on the bit rate (122, 124) of a codec that produced the source encoded data.

Abstract: The present invention deals with the problem with packet based services consuming considerable bandwidth over links with shortage of bandwidth. The object of the present invention is to reduce the amount of information when transferring a signalling message and thus save bandwidth.After receiving a signalling message in a first node the signalling message is identified. The signalling message is replaced by an indicator, under usage of information from the identification, which indicator is transferred to a second node. The second node restores the signalling message using the indicator.

Abstract: The bandwidth utilization and transmisson efficiency associated with the pointto-point transportation of internet protocol (IP) data packets in a network environment is improved by employing asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) adaptation layer two (AAL2) minicells as a bearer. Bandwidth utilization and transmission efficiency may be further enhanced by mapping one or more data fields from the header portion of the IP data packets into one or more look-up tables and then transporting the look-up table addresses in the AAL2 minicell headers rather than the data associated with the one or more data fields in the IP data packet headers.
