Date Aug. 13, 1998Sulfate cement or sulfate cement aggregates are produced herein by a process in which hydraulically active synthetic slags having slag basicities CaO/SiO2 of between 1.35 and 1.6, Al2O3 contents of 10% by weight to 20% by weight, and iron oxide contents of below 2.5% by weight are mixed with an earth alkali sulfate in an amount of 5% by weight to 20% by weight, based on the overall weight of the mixture. The hydraulically active synthetic slags can be made by mixing at least one member selected from the group consisting of waste incineration slags and blast furnace slags with steel slags to produce a melt and reducing metal oxides contained in the melt. The earth alkali sulfate is selected from the group consisting of crude gypsum, waste gas gypsum, smoke gas desulfurization plant gypsum, gypsum, or anhydrite in ground or comminuted form.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a method for desiliconizing pig iron before subsequent refining to steel. According to said method liquid steel slag is deposited onto the tapped molten pig iron slag and possibly the molten blastfurnace slag at a quantity corresponding to the silicon content of the pig iron and the iron and/or chromium oxide content of the slag after blast furnace tapping. The quantity of steel slag is chosen such that the silicon content of the pig iron is reduced to less than 0.5 weight % with a simultaneous increase in the SiO2 content of the slag and a reduction in the iron and/or chromium oxides of the liquid metal slag. The temperature of the slag iron bath is maintained at below 1,500 ~C.
