Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prepare a base film for a high-density recording medium improved in surface smoothness, traveling properties, and abrasion resistance by incorporating specific polymer particles into an arom. polyimide film. SOLUTION: A monovinyl compd. having one aliph. unsatd. bond in the molecule and a compd. which has at least two aliph. unsatd. bonds and contains a compd. formed by the addition reaction of a compd. having at least two glycidyl groups in the molecule with an unsatd. monobasic acid are copolymerized to give polymer particles having a standard deviation of the distribution of average particle sizes of 0.5 or higher and contg. 2-60wt.% structural units represented by the formula. An arom. polyimide is compounded with 0.001-3wt.% above-obtd. particles, formed into a film, stretched at 100-500 deg.C at an areal stretching ratio of 0.8-5.0, and thermally treated at 100-500 deg.C for 1sec to 30min, thus giving a base film for a high-density recording medium having an average center-line roughness of 0.2-2nm, a Young's modulus of 3,900MPa or higher at least in one direction, and a coefficient of humidity expansion of 30×10 /%RH or lower at least in one direction.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a polyester composition composed of specific crosslinked polymer particles and a metal salt of sulfonic acid, excellent in abrasion resistance and antistaticity when formed into a film, a fiber, etc., and suitable for a magnetic recording medium. CONSTITUTION:This polyester composition is composed of crosslinked polymer particles of >=350 deg.C in a thermal decomposition temperature and 0.1-10wt.% of a metal salt of a sulfonic acid expressed by the formula R(X)nSO3M [R is a 5-30C alkyl; X is an aromatic group; (n)=0-1; M is an alkali metal element]. M is preferably lithium element. When compounded with 0.1-10wt.% of a polyoxyalkylene glycol having an average molecular weight of 1000-200000, the composition has extremely improved antistaticity. As the polyester, a polyethylene terephthalate, etc., is used. As the crosslinked polymer particle, a divinylbenzene polymer, etc., is used.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide a polyester composition containing each specific a-type alumina particles and inert particles, capable of giving films excellent in wear resistance, thus suitable for magnetic recording media. CONSTITUTION:The objective composition can be obtained by incorporating a polyester (pref. polyethylene terephthalate or polyethylene 2,6- naphthalenedicarboxylate) with (A) 0.05-5wt.%, based on the final composition, of a-type alumina particles 10-40m /g in specific surface area and 0.05-0.5mum in average diameter and (B) pref. 0.05-5wt.%, based on the final composition, of inert particles /g in specific surface area and 0.1-1mum in average diameter (e.g. calcium carbonate particles). Both the particles A and B are incorporated in the polyester, for example, by directly adding these particles to the polymerization reaction system for the polyester.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To produce a polyester film improved in abrasion resistance by melt extruding a polyester compsn. contg. agglomerates formed from primary particles with a specified mean diameter to thereby form a film contg. agglomerates with a mean diameter smaller than that of the agglomerates before the melt extrusion. CONSTITUTION:A polyester compsn., e.g. a polyalkylene terephthalate compsn., contg. agglomerates with a mean diameter of 50-2,000mum and formed from primary particles, such as of ZrO2, with a mean diameter of 1-50mum is melt extruded with e.g. a Dulmage type screw extruder at the m.p. of the polyester or higher but not higher than the m.p. plus 60 deg.C, giving a polyester film contg. 0.05-5wt.% agglomerates with a mean diameter of 30-500mum. The film is stretched longitudinally and transversely and thermaly set to give a biaxially oriented polyester film.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a polyester composition which can give a film resistant to peeling-off of particles and excellent in wear resistance and slidability by adding a specified amount of calcium carbonate particles having a specified mean particle diameter and a specified degree of sphericity to a polyester. CONSTITUTION:Calcium carbonate particles having a mean particle diameter of 0.01-3mum and a degree of sphericity as defined by the formula of 0.5-0.95 and being desirably cubic in shape are prepared. An example of the process for preparing these particles comprises blowing carbon dioxide into calcium hydroxide in a solvent such as water or methanol to form an amorphous gel product and forming this product into particles while controlling the particle shape, the particle diameter distribution, the particle diameter, etc., by changing synthetic conditions, additives, etc. These particles are added to a polyester (e.g. polyethylene terephthalate) or added to the reactional system during the production of a polyester to produce a polyester composition containing 0.005-5wt.% above particles.

CONSTITUTION:A particulate aluminum hydroxide represented by the formula (wherein n is a positive number) having a secondary particle size lower than 1mum is incorporated into a polyester. Examples of the aluminum hydroxide are boehmite, pseudoboehmite, and diaspore. The compsn. is prepd. by dispersing the aluminum hydroxide in a glycol used as a starting material of the polyester and adding the resulting slurry to the reaction system for producing the polyester or by mixing the aluminum hydroxide into a molten polyester. Pref. 0.01-10 pts.wt. the aluminum hydroxide is contained in 100 pts.wt. the polyester.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the subject polyester composition containing a thermoplastic polyester and inorganic fine particles coated with a zirconium compound and giving a film having high abrasion resistance and scratch resistance and useful for magnetic recording medium, etc. CONSTITUTION:The objective polyester composition useful for film for magnetic recording medium, etc., having excellent abrasion resistance and scratch resistance is composed of a thermoplastic polyester (e.g. polyethylene terephthalate) containing inorganic fine particles coated with a zirconium compound. The composition is produced by adding magnesium acetate, etc., as a catalyst to dimethyl terephthalate and ethylene glycol, carrying out ester interchange reaction under heating, incorporating the reaction product with an ethylene glycol slurry of inorganic fine particles (e.g. silica particles) coated with a zirconium compound (e.g. zirconia), antimony trioxide as a catalyst and trimethyl phosphate as a heat stabilizer and subjecting to polycondensation reaction by heating under reduced pressure.
