Abstract: A continuous process for hydroforming a naphthenic naphtha comprises contacting the naphtha in the presence of a hydrogen-containing gas with a fluidized bed of catalyst, stripping contaminated catalyst withdrawn from the reaction zone to remove volatile hydrocarbons and hydrogen, regenerating the stripped catalyst as a fluidized bed with a regeneration gas to remove a portion but not all of the deposits, and then returning the regenerated catalyst to the reaction zone. As shown, contaminated catalyst (for example molybdenum oxide on alumina gel) is withdrawn from the reactor 7 through line 21 into stripper 22 where it is treated in countercurrent with steam introduced at 30; filters for removing solids from the stripping gas are situated in the expanded portion 31 of the stripper. Stripped catalyst is conveyed by compressed air entering at 24 into regenerator 25 where the deposits are burned off at a temperature not exceeding 950 DEG F. so as to leave 0.5-2 per cent. by weight of carbon on the regenerated catalyst; a cooler 29 may be provided. The catalyst leaves the regenerator by pipe 28 and mixed with the hydrogen feed to the reactor in line 8. The stripping stage may last for 20-30 minutes and may also be carried out with hydrogen or flue gas.

Abstract: A lubricating grease composition comprises a non-hydrocarbon oil, containing 50 per cent. or more by weight of a synthetic complex ester of lubricating grade and viscosity and 5 to 25 per cent. by weight, based on the total composition of a complex soap thickener composed primarily of 0.5 to 2 mols. of alkali metal soap of fatty acid in the C12 to C22 range and 1 mol. of alkali metal salt of a carboxylic acid having a molecular weight below 100. The complex ester may be one prepared by esterifying a dihydric alcohol, such as glycol, triethylene glycol, or a thioglycol, with a dibasic acid, such as adipic acid or sebacic acid, to produce an ester having a dihydric alcohol residue at the centre and two dibasic acid residues attached; the end groups of the acid residues being esterified with a monohydric alcohol, such as ethyl hexanol or the alcohol mixture known as "Lorol B". (The word "Lorol" is a Registered Trade Mark.) The ester may also be one having a dibasic acid centre esterified with two mols. of dihydric alcohol, and the esterification completed with two mols. of monobasic acid. The fatty acid soap may be lithium or sodium stearate, or a lithium soap of "Hydrofol Acids 54," derived from hydrogenated fish oil. The low molecular weight salt may be lithium or sodium acetate, propionate, formate, acrylate methacrylate or crotonate. The complex thickener may be prepared by neutralizing a mixture of the fatty acid and low molecular weight acid with lithium or sodium hydroxide, dried, and then added to the complex ester; or the salt and soap may be formed separately, dried, and added to the ester. The non-hydrocarbon oil may contain up to 50 per cent. of a silicone oil such as a polydimethyl silicone or a simple ester, such as di-2-ethylhexyl sebacate or adipate. Antioxidants such as phenothiazine and phenyl-alpha-naphthylamine, tackiness agents, metal deactivators, plasticizers and extreme pressure agents may be added.

Abstract: Apparatus for counter-currently contacting a gas or vapour with a fluidized solid comprises a tower divided into superimposed chambers by perforated plates 6-9 through which the gas ascends, downcomers 11-13 placed alternatively at opposite sides of the tower and each having its entrance above the level of the discharge end of the downcomer at the opposite side of the same chamber thereby causing a bed of fluidized solid to flow across each chamber, and one or more series of vertical or inclined baffles 14, 15 arranged parallel to one another across the path of the flowing solid. When several rows of baffles 15 are used, they may be staggered across the path of the gases. The baffles may be rotatable about horizontal shafts coinciding with their longitudinal axis 14a or one edge 15a and mechanism (not shown) may be provided for varying their inclinations in unison. The apparatus is applicable to catalytic reactions such as the cracking of hydrocarbons, and to the separation of gases by solid absorbents.

Abstract: An additive for lubricating oils (see Group III) is obtained by reacting a sulphurized or phospho-sulphurized rosin, or its immediate acid or ester derivatives or the corresponding hydrogenated, methylated or ethylated derivatives, with from 2 to 100 per cent. by weight, based on the weight of the sulphurized or phospho-sulphurized compound, of a hydrocarbon containing at least one double bond at a temperature of from 60 DEG to 400 DEG F. for a period of 15 minutes to 20 hours. A preferred compound to be sulphurized (e.g. by heating with phosphorus pentasulphide with or without sulphiding agents such as H2S and elemental sulphur) is methyl abietate. Suitable hydrocarbons containing a double bond which may be reacted with the sulphurized or phosphosulphurized compounds included monocyclic or dicyclic terpenes such as turpentine, dipentene, a -pinene and terpinene, and olefins such as isobutylene and diisobutylene. The reaction stabilizes the sulphurized or phosphosulphurized compound against evolution of H2S at temperatures up to 400 DEG F.ALSO:An additive for lubricating oils (see Group III) is obtained by reacting a sulphurized or phospho-sulphurized organic compound selected from the group of natural oils and fats of animal or vegetable origin, rosins, their immediate acid or ester derivatives or the corresponding hydrogenated, methylated or ethylated derivatives, with from 2 to 100 per cent by weight, based on the weight of the sulphurized or phospho-sulphurized compound, of a hydrocarbon containing at least one double bond at a temperature of from 60 DEG to 400 DEG F. for a period of 15 minutes to 20 hours. Preferred compounds to be sulphurized (e.g. by heating with phosphorus pentasulphide with or without sulphiding agents such as H2S and elemental sulphur) include sperm oil, lard oil, tall oil, lanolin, degras (wool fat) and methyl abietate. Suitable hydrocarbons containing a double bond which may be reacted with the sulphurized or phospho-sulphurized compounds include monocyclic or dicyclic terpenes such as turpentine, dipentene, a -pinene and terpinene, and olefins such as isobutylene and diisobutylene. The reaction stabilizes the sulphurized or phospho-sulphurized compound against evolution of H2S at temperatures up to 400 DEG F. In an example a phospho-sulphurized sperm oil containing 0.5 per cent of phosphorus and 6 per cent of sulphur is treated with 10 per cent by weight of dipentene for one hour at 250 DEG F.ALSO:An additive for lubricating oils is obtained by reacting a sulphurized or phospho-sulphurized organic compound selected from the group of natural oils and fats of animal or vegetable origin, rosins, their immediate acid or ester derivatives or the corresponding hydrogenated, methylated or ethylated derivatives, with from 2 to 100 per cent. by weight, based on the weight of the sulphurized or phospho-sulphurized compound, of a hydrocarbon containing at least one double bond at a temperature of from 60 DEG to 400 DEG F. for a period of 15 minutes to 20 hours. The additive is employed in minor proportions, preferably from 0.01 to 10 per cent. by weight based on the weight of the total lubricant. Preferred compounds to be sulphurized or phosphosulphurized (e.g. by heating with phosphorus pentasulphide with or without sulphiding agents such as H2S and elemental sulphur) include sperm oil, lard oil, tall oil, lanolin, degras (wool fat) and methyl abietate. The reaction stabilizes the sulphurized or phospho-sulphurized compound against evolution of H2S at temperatures up to 400 DEG F. The products may be added to mineral base lubricants and to greases and synthetic lubricants. Other conventional additives such as oxidation inhibitors, viscosity index improvers, pour point depressants and extreme pressure additives may also be included in the compositions. In an example a phospho-sulphurized sperm oil containing 0.5 per cent. of phosphorus and 6 per cent. of sulphur is treated with 10 per cent. by weight of dipentene for one hour at 250 DEG F.
