Abstract:
An apparatus and method for encoding and decoding additional information into a stream of digitized samples in an integral manner. The information is encoded using special keys. The information is contained in the samples, not prepended or appended to the sample stream. The method makes it extremely difficult to find the information in the samples if the proper keys are not possessed by the decoder. The method does not cause a significant degradation to the sample stream. The method is used to establish ownership of copyrighted digital multimedia content and provide a disincentive to piracy of such material.

The first entity transmits structure data (S(c1 ')) to a transfer control entity (50), the structure data being indicative of the structure of at least a portion of the content data. The transfer control entity selects a transmission key (k1) in dependence upon the structure data, and transmits the transmission key to the first entity. The first entity applies the transmission key to the content data to remove the first watermark from the digital content and encrypt the digital content. The first entity transmits the encrypted digital content (E(c1 ')) to a second entity (70). The transfer control entity transmits a receive key (k2) to the second entity. Advanced watermark embedders use psycho visual / acoustic models to minimize perception of the embedded watermark in media contents. However, it is expensive to implement such advanced watermark embedders in consumer appliances (3) such as DVD recorders. In accordance with the invention, embedding strength parameters (JND) are calculated (13) off-line at a remote location (1) and transmitted along with the media contents to the consumer appliance (3). A relatively simple embedder (33) uses the received parameters to control the strength of the watermark (36) to be embedded. The parameters may be accommodated in the transmitted signal as payload of a fragile watermark or as user data in an encrypted MPEG stream.

A video signal processing apparatus, a video signal reproduction apparatus, and a video signal recording apparatus capable of preventing unauthorized copying of thumb nail images. A thumb nail encoder (19) creates a thumb nail image of a video signal input from a terminal (12). A macro vision detector (13), a CGMS detection/updating unit (14), and a WM (watermark) detection/updating unit (15) detect an analog copy protection signal (APS) of the video signal input from the terminal (12), a CGMS signal as copy generation management information, and a watermark, respectively and output them to a controller (21). According to these copy limit information, the controller (21) creates thumb nail image copy limit information. In an information recording medium (26), a thumb nail image and its copy limit information are recorded. The present invention can be applied to a recording apparatus for recording data on an information recording medium and a reproduction apparatus for reproducing data from the information recording medium.

A watermark system includes an embedder (106), detector (110), and reader (116). The watermark embedder (106) encodes a watermark signal (108) in a potentially corrupted version of the combined signal, and computes its orientation. Finally, a reader extracts a message in the watermark signal from the combined signal using the orientation to approximate the original state of the combined signal. While adapted for images, video and audio, the watermark system, applies to other electronic and physical media. For example, it can be applied to mark graphical models, blank paper, film and other substrates, texturing objects for ID purposes, etc.
