Abstract:
System and method for automatically programming a universal remote. In the system, the remote acquires identification data from a particular device at which it is pointed. The data is processed to determine command protocols associated with the particular device. Control commands for the particular device input to the remote by a user are formatted according to the command protocols associated with the particular device.
Abstract:
An addressable light fixture is described wherein a light fixture module is individually addressable for programming by remote control. The remote control may individually select each light fixture module through visible and narrowly defined selected light followed by transmission of programming commands for programming of pre-defined scenes, functions or other user defined and desired effects. Each of the fixture modules may be selected or de-selected through the use of laser light and a plurality of track control modules may be collectively programmed through the use of a repeater module, all of the modules communicatively connected to each other and selectable by a visible narrow light source such that the user may readily activate or de-activate programming sequences.

Abstract:
A system and method for providing dynamic feedback projection from a hand held pointing device is provided. The system includes a hand held pointing device that is capable of two way communication with appliance interfaces associated with appliances that are controllable by the hand held pointing device. The hand held pointer is capable of transmitting signals to the appliance interfaces and receiving response signals from the appliance interfaces. The hand held pointing device further includes a visible light projection apparatus for projecting light onto a remote surface. The projected light is displaced on the remote surface by a light projection modification apparatus such that the projected light creates images corresponding to the response signals from the appliance interfaces.
Abstract:
A plurality of spaced ceiling mounted fixtures or other controllable electrical appliances have radiation detectors mounted within each fixture and wired internally of the fixture to a dimming circuit or to a ballast. The radiation detectors have sensitivity over a wide angle and have elongated plastic radiation conduction rods which extend to or beyond the plane of the lens of the fixture to be located free of shadow effects of reflections of the fixture lens. A flexible end light fiber optics can be used in place of the acrylic rods. A narrow beam radiation transmitter selectively illuminates one of the rods or end light fiber optics without illuminating the others. The dimming circuits or ballasts within the fixtures can be further controlled by external dimmers, occupancy sensors, timeclocks, photosensors and other types of input devices. The radiation detector and ballast can occupy a common housing and share the same power supply and circuit board. The microcontroller for the radiation detector operates with a 4 of 4 voting mode until a valid signal is detected to switch the system to a 3 of 4 voting mode. A novel mounting adaptor for mounting a visible light fiber optic cable is disclosed with the visible light fiber optic cable conducting infrared radiation for up to 24 inches.
Abstract:
A remote operator includes a laser-actuated photo switch. A hand held laser sweeps past an active or sensitive area on the unit to cause the unit to change states, e.g., between nullonnull and nulloff.null In a lamp dimmer implementation, pointing the laser at the unit can cause it to increment (between dim and bright, fast and slow, soft and loud, etc.). The laser produces a narrow beam of laser light at a single characteristic wavelength. A dark filter or other optical filter can be disposed over the optical sensor element for passing only light at the laser's characteristic wavelength. A monostable, bistable or other multivibrator unit can be employed to effect toggling or a timed on (or timed off) operation. The remote operator can be integrated into the housing or body of the load device, e.g., into a ceiling fan, wall switch, table lamp, or any other device in need of remote controlled operation.
Abstract:
The field of view of a video camera is set to include electric appliances such as a refrigerator, TV set, air conditioner and lamp installed within a room. When the user operates a remote controller to emit a visible laser beam toward a controlable range including these electric appliances set within this field of view, and designate a certain one of the appliances by the resulting pointer within the controlable range, the video camera for extracting only the visible laser beam of a wave length picks up this pointer, and a control box detects the position of the pointer within the controlable range from the output of the camera so that the appliance designated by this pointer can be detected and remotely controlled by use of the remote controller.

A plurality of spaced ceiling mounted fixtures or other controllable electrical appliances have wide angle radiation detectors mounted within each fixture and wired internally of the fixture to a dimming circuit or to a ballast. The radiation detectors have sensitivity over a wide angle and are fixed over a small opening in the fixture. A narrow beam radiation transmitter selectively illuminates one of the radiation detectors without illuminating the others. The dimming circuits or ballasts within the fixtures can be further controlled by external dimmers, occupancy sensors, timeclocks, photosensors and other types of input devices.
Abstract:
An electro-optical switching system includes a plurality of visually activated switches, one for each one of a plurality of different electronic apparatus, each including electromagnetic radiation sensors having a detection surface and each controlling the application of electrical power to the respective equipment in response to an impinging electromagnetic beam incident at the detection surface for a determined time interval. A pulsed electromagnetic beam is provided by a transmitter included within an electromagnetic activating source held, or disposed on a portion of the anatomy of, a human operator who aligns the beam with the detection surface on the selected one of the switches with the aid of a visual reticle image provided by a reticle generator included in the activating source and boresighted with the transmitter. The system further includes a control unit responsive to each of the radiation sensors for discriminating between the pulsed electromagnetic beam energy and the ambient energy background, and for providing actuating signals to the respective equipment in response to the presence of incident pulsed electromagnetic energy at the associated visually activated switch detection surface for a determined time interval in the absence of incident pulsed electromagnetic energy at each of the other switches within the same time interval, the control unit providing actuation of the various selected equipment, sequentially, one at a time.
