Abstract:
A detection system (600) is used during irradiation of an interaction region of a structure including embedded material with laser light. The detection system (600) includes a collimating lens (610) positioned to receive light emitted from the interaction region. The detection system (600) further includes an optical fiber (620) optically coupled to the collimating lens (610) and a spectrometer (630) optically coupled to the optical fiber (620). The spectrometer (630) is adapted for analysis of the light for indications of the embedded material within the interaction region. The spectrometer (630) includes an input slit (631) adapted to receive light from the optical fiber (620). The input slit (631) has a width selected to provide sufficient light transmittance and sufficient resolution. The spectrometer (630) further includes an optical grating (632) adapted to receive light from the input slit (631) and to separate the light into a spectrum of wavelengths. The spectrometer (630) further includes a collection lens (633) adapted to receive a selected range of wavelengths of the separated light from the optical grating (632). The spectrometer (630) further includes a light sensor (634) adapted to receive the selected range of wavelengths and to generate a signal corresponding to an intensity of the received light.
Abstract:
A system which facilitates the closure of puncture wounds in the vasculature of a patient by helping locate and isolate the site of the puncture wound in the patient. A tube or catheter having an indicator hole for aspirating blood assists in locating the exact site of the wound. A retractor moves the surrounding tissue laterally forming an access path to the wound, and acts as a guide for the wound closure device. The retractor and accessories are preferably used in combination with a surgical clip applicator which delivers clips to the site of the wound, but can also be used with other methods of wound closure such as suturing and stapling.
Abstract:
The present invention provides medicament-containing cyanoacrylate adhesive formulations for sealing wounds. The adhesive comprises a cyanoacrylate, a substance, and a defect forming agent, wherein the defect forming agent is capable of being removed from a cured cyanoacrylate matrix by solvation in an aqueous solution whereby a plurality of defects in the matrix are formed permitting release of the substance from the matrix at a controlled rate.
Abstract:
A tiered communications architecture for managing network traffic in a distributed system. Communication between client or control computers and a plurality of hardware devices is administered by agent and monitor devices whose activities are coordinated to reduce the number of open channels or sockets. The communications architecture also improves the transparency and scalability of the distributed system by reducing network mapping dependence. The architecture is desirably implemented in a proton beam therapy system to provide flexible security policies which improve patient safety and facilitate system maintenance and development.
Abstract:
An apparatus for facilitating the locating, everting, and closing of an opening in a blood vessel. The apparatus can include a closure instrument having an elongated member defining a longitudinal axis and proximal and distal ends. The elongated member has a vacuum lumen extending at least a portion of the length thereof for conveying a vacuum and terminating in a vacuum port adjacent the distal end of the elongated member. The distal end of the elongated member is dimensioned to be positioned proximal a vessel opening in a blood vessel whereby vessel edge portions defining the vessel opening are at least partially drawn toward the vacuum port in response to a vacuum conveyed through the vacuum lumen. At least one surgical clip is mounted adjacent the distal end of the elongated member and is adapted to be formed to an at least partially formed condition thereof. The one clip is positioned with respect to the vacuum port so as to engage the vessel edge portions drawn toward the vacuum port when the clip is moved to the formed condition, thus at least partially closing the vessel opening. A method for locating, everting, and closing an opening in a blood vessel is also disclosed.
Abstract:
A plant-based edible vaccine against autoimmune disease prepared by expressing a CTB-autoantigen chimeric gene construct in plant cells and transgenic plants is disclosed. DNA constructs, expression vectors comprising a nucleotide sequence that encodes a CTB-autoantigen chimeric gene, which are optimized for expression in plants, are described.
Abstract:
A trocar system for assisting in the generation of endosurgical ports is disclosed in which a trocar facilitator is used to place the peritoneum in counter-traction to facilitate the penetration of the trocar. Peritoneal counter-traction results in increased surface tension which reduces the force and downward momentum necessary to achieve trocar penetration, thereby eliminating the risk of excess penetration and injury to internal organs. The facilitator is of a corkscrew-like design, with an attached support ring and a removable guide piece having a hollow, cylindrical passageway which aids in the insertion and support of the trocar, cannula, and other endoscopic surgical instruments. In another embodiment, the facilitator is configured to aid in the introduction of carbon dioxide gas into the abdominal cavity of the patient. An improved curved tip of the blade of the trocar facilitator is also disclosed.
Abstract:
A method of preventing or delaying the onset of symptoms of Alzheimer's Disease includes the step of administering to a patient in need of such treatment a composition having an effective Alzheimer's Disease prophylactic amount of an enantiomerically stable R-NSAID or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, the composition being substantially free of the S-enantiomer of the selected R-NSAID.
