Abstract:
Water-based compositions that are resistant to dirt pickup, efflorescence, tannin bleed-through and surfactant leaching are described. The water-based composition includes a latex or water-dispersible polymer and a non-VOC UV-VIS (preferably, ultraviolet) absorber as a dirt pickup resistance additive. Methods of making water-based compositions including a non-VOC UV-VIS absorber as an additive are also described.
Abstract:
Medium and high molecular weight polyester polymers are prepared in syrup form from an ester oligomer. The oligomer is converted to the polymer by polycondensation at elevated pressure and elevated temperature in a nonreactive carrier capable of forming an azeotrope with water. The ester oligomerization or polycondensation reactions desirably are monitored using a non-viscometric technique. The process has a rapid cycle time. The syrup contains the polymer and nonreactive carrier, and may more conveniently be used to make initially non-solid products such as polyester coatings than is the case when employing pelletized solid polyester resins.
Abstract:
Methods and systems for coating metal substrates are provided. The methods and systems include sequential application of low flow and high flow powder coatings followed by a single heating step to provide a cured coating. The methods and systems include a marker that allows coating uniformity to be monitored and assessed during application. The described methods provide coatings with optimal surface smoothness and edge coverage.
Abstract:
Methods and systems for coating metal substrates are provided. The methods and systems include application of TGIC-based powder coatings that demonstrate superdurability without compromising flexibility.
Abstract:
The present invention is directed to a coating composition or paint comprising a multistage latex with at least first and second stages, wherein the composition or paint is substantially free of volatile organic compounds (VOC) and capable of film formation even in the absence of coalescent agents. The base paint formulation is capable of being tinted at a point-of-sale (i.e. in-store) using a colorant composition of a type and quantity required to produce a paint of desired color and finish. The paints, including deeply colored paints, show improved block resistance, scrub resistance and tack resistance.
Abstract:
A method includes obtaining first color information for each of a plurality of first samples of a first target color with a color measurement device connected to a computing device including a display. A digital color image of at least one first target color is displayed on the display. An offset value for each first target color is determined such that the digital color image of each first target color matches the corresponding first target color on each of the first samples. A second sample including a second target color is scanned to obtain second color information. A processor of the computing device determines, using the offset values of the first target colors, an interpolated offset for the display such that the digital image of the second target color matches the second tar get color.
Abstract:
Disclosed are Bisphenol A (BPA), Bisphenol F, Bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (BADGE), and Bisphenol F diglycidyl ether (BFDGE)-free coating compositions for metal substrates including an under-coat composition containing a polyester (co)polymer, and an under-coat cross-linker; and an over-coat composition containing a poly(vinyl chloride) (co)polymer dispersed in a substantially nonaqueous carrier liquid, an over-coat cross-linker, and a functional (meth)acrylic (co)polymer. Also provided is a method of coating a metal substrate using the BPA, BPF, BADGE and BFDGE-free coating system to produce a hardened protective coating useful in fabricating metal storage containers. The coated substrate is particularly useful in fabricating multi-part foodstuffs storage containers with “easy-open” end closures.
Abstract:
Polycyclocarbonate compounds and upgraded molecular weight polymers made from such compounds are provided. The polymers have particular utility in coating compositions, especially for use on food and beverage contact substrates that are formed into or will be formed into containers or container components.

Abstract:
An article, comprising a food or beverage container (20), or a portion thereof, that includes a metal substrate (30, 32) and a coating (34) disposed on at least a portion of the metal substrate (30, 32). The coating (34) is preferably formed from a coating composition that comprises an emulsion polymerized latex having a first-stage emulsion polymerized copolymer and a second-stage emulsion polymerized copolymer.
