Substituted 2 - mercapto - 4,6 - dichloro - 8 - triazines of the formula where R is cycloalkyl, alkenyl, aralkyl or alkyl with 1-18 carbon atoms which may optionally be substituted by one or more -OR 1 , SR 1 or -CN groups, where R 1 is C 1-4 alkyl, are prepared by reacting cyanuric chloride with a mercaptan of formula H-S-R, on a mercaptide thereof, in a heterogeneous system comprising water and at least one waterimmiscible organic solvent inert to the cyanuric chloride, optionally in the presence of an inorganic hydrogen chloride acceptor (which must be present if the free mercaptan is used), with thorough mixing of the phases and at a temperature below the boiling point of the organic solvent, reduced or elevated pressures may be used if desired. Specified mercaptides are those of silver, mercury, zinc, lead and alkali metals and many suitable solvents are specified. It is desirable to use a pH value below 8, and the reaction may be carried out continuously.

    Abstract: Compounds of the formula where R1-R4 are hydrogen or C1- 6 alkyl are prepared by reacting ammonium cyanide or a metal cyanide with a compound where R5-R7 are C1- 6 alkyl radical and X(-) is an anion. Examples prepare 2,4-bis-ethyl-amino -, 2,4 - bis - isopropylamino -, 2 - ethyl-amino - 4 - isopropylamino - and 2,4 - bis - diethylamino - 6 - cyano - 1,3,5 - triazine. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 944,063.
