    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily discriminate whether an optical disk has an increased recording capacity or not. SOLUTION: An optical disk 10 is rotated at a desired speed and at a desired position, and a signal recorded on the optical disk is read. When a CRC recorded on a read-in area or a program area on which data can be recorded is reproduced, reproduction is performed by using a CRC error detection polynomial expression based on a difference of unit delay amount during interleave processing. A difference in recording density is discriminated by the reproduction output. A de-interleave processing system selected by a short unit delay amount is selected in the case of an optical disk for normal density, and a de-interleave processing system selected by a long unit delay amount is selected in the case of a high-density optical disk. Thereby, suitable data processing can be realized according to the difference in recording density.

When a sync pattern is detected from the data correctly in a sync pattern detecting and interpolating part 17, the comparison error signal is inputted to the VCO 15 as it is and when it is not detected correctly, a sample-and-hold part 14 holds the voltage of the comparison error signal by a control signal from a control part 20. At this time, the sync pattern interpolating operation of the sync pattern detecting and interpolating part 17 is suspended.

When the compressed data stored in the data buffer 4 run out during the recording into the tape 8, the tape is rewound for repositioning R. After the data are stored in the data buffer 4 again, the tape 8 is sent in the forward direction again, and the compressed data are recorded from the data buffer 4. The data compressing rate is estimated by a CPU 15, and the repositioning is controlled based on the estimated data compressing rate.
