A composition suitable for forming surface coatings, laminates or composite materials formed by bringing together:(a) a first polymer containing carboxylic acid, anhydride or acid chloride groups,(b) an amine or alcohol or a derivative thereof which is a tertiary amine, a ketimine, an acetal or an oxazolidine and(c) a second polymer capable of cross-linking with the first polymer in the presence of the amine or alcohol.The components may be initially in two packs and either mixed prior to application or sprayed onto the surface simultaneously from separate nozzles.The surface coatings are particularly suitable for coating surfaces which are otherwise difficult to coat and protect and may be applied to wet or rusted surfaces without surface preparation.

Coating compositions comprising a polymeric polyol with a polyester crosslinking agent having at least two beta-alkoxyester groups per molecule are disclosed. The compositions, when applied to a substrate and cured in the presence of a transesterification catalyst, give solvent-resistant coatings.

The present invention relates to N-methylol amide-containing resinous compositions and the methods of preparing them. Aqueous dispersions of the instant resinous composition containing N-methylol amides in amounts sufficient to impart self-curing at comparatively low temperatures are disclosed. The aqueous dispersions of the instant resinous compositions are useful as coating compositions; they are particularly suited to electrodeposition.

A fast curing, high solids coating composition that is adapted for use as an automotive topcoat and which upon curing forms a hard, glossy, durable coating exhibiting excellent resistance to solvents and water. The coating composition contains greater than about 60 percent by weight of nonvolatile solids and, exclusive of pigments, solvents and other nonreactive components, consists essentially of:(A) a bifunctional copolymer bearing hydroxy functionality and pendant epoxy functionality, having a number average molecular weight (M.sub.n) of between about 1500 and about 10,000 and a glass transition temperature (Tg) of between about -25.degree. and about 70.degree.:(B) a reactive catalyst comprising at least one hydroxy functional organophosphate ester selected from certain mono-and diesters of phosphoric acid;(C) an amine-aldehyde crosslinking agent; and(D) optionally, a hydroxy functional additive. The hydroxy functional organophosphate ester is included in the composition in an amount sufficient to provide between about 0.67 and about 1.4 equivalents of acid functionality in copolymer (A), and the amino crosslinking agent is included in the composition in an amount sufficient to provide at least about 0.4 equivalents of nitrogen crosslinking functionality for each equivalent of hydroxy functionality included in the composition.
