A system and method of determining a paint formula having an effect pigment is provided. The system includes a coarseness gauge which may be placed adjacent to a painted surface, such as that of a vehicle. A technician compares the gauge to the painted surface to determine a coarseness of the effect pigment. This coarseness is then used to select and/or adjust a paint formula such that an accurate match may be achieved.

A colorimeter method and apparatus is described. The colorimeter includes a plurality of sensors/filter systems with non overlapping spectral responses, adequate for providing data capable of translation into standard coordinates system such as, CIE XYZ, CIE L*a*b*, or CIE Luv, as well as non-standard operable coordinate systems. The field of view of the colorimeter is chosen to closely track the response of the human eye using an optical path configured to select and limit the field of view in a manner that is insensitive to placement of the colorimeter on the source image. The optical path from the source image to the sensor is configured to select preferred light rays while rejecting undesirable light rays to maximize the signal/noise ratio. A rearward facing sensor channel is included to simultaneously measure ambient light impinging on the source image and feedback means to provide status and/or change of information.

The invention is a cable identifier apparatus and a method for fast identification of multi-wire or multi fiber cable. The method is based on illumination of colored buffer of the wire or fiber, registration the reflected light and comparison the measuring data with reference data stored in the memory. The reference data is loaded by measuring the color parameters of the buffer of known identification. The cable identifier apparatus comprises a portable hand-held device with a probe for fixing the buffer in a holder, illuminating the buffer, controlling the incident light and detecting the reflected light with photodetectors. The data is proceed by a microcontroller and an identification symbol of the buffer is displayed in LCD. The variation of the ambient light is compensated by separate measurement of dark and light signals from photodetectors.

A system for measuring the color quality of rounded objects is disclosed. A stand has a mandrel for holding the object in a fixed position. Preferably, the mandrel includes an expandable bladder mounted for rotation on an axle. The stand has a reflectometer coupled thereto in such a way as to permit angular movement of the densitometer in a fixed plane. The can is clamped in a fixed position between the holding means and the densitometer such that the densitometer is in a fixed radial orientation relative to the surface of the object. Different points on the surface of the object may be measured by rotating and translating the object and/or the reflectometer. Rotational and translation control of positioning can be performed automatically.
