    Abstract: The apparatus for mixing substances of different densities comprises a receptacle (13) in which the treatment is carried out. In order to avoid separation of the substances, the receptacle (13) is mounted elastically and is subjected, according to the process, to a compound vibrational motion of high frequency and low amplitude. The apparatus comprises a motor (9) which has a vertical shaft (10) carrying eccentric masses (11 and 12). The motor (9) is integrally attached to a superstructure (5, 6, 7, 8) resting on vertical springs (4). When the eccentric masses (11 and 12) are in rotation, a vibrational motion of rotary nature is established, this motion being transmitted to the receptacle (13).

    Abstract: 1397403 Coating-apparatus; vibratory mix- ing WILLIAM BOULTON Ltd 25 May 1972 [3 June 1971] 18760/71 Headings B1C and B2L Particulate material is coated with a finer powder material in a treatment chamber 13 which is subjected to vibrations. As shown in Fig. 1 the chamber 13 is of semi-toroidal shape and is lined with synthetic rubber. Particles to be coated are fed in measured quantities from a hopper 15 and the coating material from a supply 16. The treatment chamber is supported on a sleeve 6 mounted on springs 4 and is vibrated by eccentric weights 11, 12 on the shaft of a motor 9. The coating material and particles to be coated are first mixed by the vibrations and the coating material is then attracted to the surface of the particulate material by electrostatic charges built up in the material and then impact-bedded into the surface of the particles. The motor can run at 1500 rpm and produce vibrations having an amplitude of # of an inch. An exit 18 for the coated material is provided. In one modification a cylindrical drum having an upwardly coned bottom surface and a spiral ramp around the inside wall is provided. In this case materials deposited on the cone rise up the ramp so that a continuous process can be provided. In a second modification the coating chamber as a whole can have a spiral form. A removable top cover with windows can be provided on all the treatment chambers. Instead of an electric motor, electromagnetic, piezo-electric pneumatic or hydraulic vibrators can be provided and air springs instead of the coil springs 4 may be provided.

    Abstract: An apparatus for the surface finishing of workpieces comprises a plurality of open-topped containers 8 for the workpieces and liquid and solid finishing media, said containers being mounted on a common support 6 adapted to be oscillated, each container having an opening at one end and closure means 9 which can be selectively operated to discharge liquid only from the containers or discharge the workpieces. The support 6 is mounted on springs 3. Oscillation is caused by an out-of-balance shaft 5 to which out-of-balance masses 15 are attached, the whole being driven by motor 4 and belt 41 and supported in bearings mounted on support 6. The closure means or gates 9 are adjustable in height and can be secured at any desired level by clamps 10. Perforations 16 are provided in the gates so that when the gates are closed the perforations are below the bottom of the troughs 8. The troughs discharge into a channel 11 attached to one of the longer sides of frame 6, the channel leading down into an opening 12 with a baffle 121 provided in the base. The entire frame 6 together with the discharge channel is oscillated. Liquid may be discharged from the troughs and replaced by rinsing liquid which in its turn is run off, and at the end of the process the gates may be raised to permit discharge of the contents of the trough into channel 11. The whole process may be carried out without stopping the motor 4.

    Abstract: 614579 Disclosed is a method of reducing biofilm formation on a surface, the method comprising the steps of: a) providing particles of at least one material; and b) applying the particles from step a) to the surface in the presence in a liquid via at least one predetermined acoustic wave frequency to facilitate sonic impaction and adhesion of the particles onto the surface wherein at least one surface contour of the material is formed on the surface after step b) to reduce the formation of a biofilm on the surface over time. The surface is any part of a dairy farm milking system selected from the group consisting of: pipes, milking cups, inflations, claws, milk meter, hoses, vacuum lines, water lines and water troughs. The particles are selected from the group consisting of silicon dioxide (silica), silicon, silicone, silane, at least one precious metal and a combination thereof. The process produces a surface that under AFM looks like that shown in figure 1 with an alteration in the contour of the surface (1) at the nano-scale by application of nanoparticles to a dry surface in a liquid by creating a non-uniform pattern of uneven heights, shapes, lengths and spaces (2) to the surface (1) which are inhospitable to bacterial attachment and therefore biofilm growth.
