A device for embossing and laminating a multiple-web web material, comprising: a first and second embossing cylinder (1, 3), provided with tips and arranged with parallel and adjacent axes so as to farm a nip (G) between them; a pair of pressure rollers, (5, 7), each of which cooperates with one of the embossing cylinders; an adhesive applicator (17) associated with the first embossing cylinder; and a laminating roll (13) arranged downstream of the nip (G) between the embossing cylinders (1, 3) and cooperating with the first embossing cylinder (1). Planes (P3, P5) contain axis (1A, 3A) of each embossing cylinder (1, 3) and the axis (5A, 7A) of the corresponding pressure roll (5, 7) are both inclined with respect to the plane. (P2) containing the axes (1A, 3A) of the embossing cylinders at an angle different from 0 and 90 degrees.
Abstract:
An embosser can emboss two webs of sheet material with either nested or foot-to-foot embossments. The embosser includes two steel embossing rolls which are engraved with the same embossing pattern. When foot-to-foot embossments are desired, the embossing rolls are positioned so that the corresponding embossments on the two rolls are aligned. When nested embossed are desired, one of the embossing rolls is moved either axially or circumferentially, or both, relative to the other embossing roll so that embossments on the two rolls nest.
Abstract:
An embossed multiple ply paper product and process for producing such product displaying aesthetically pleasing decorative attributes and exhibiting functional characteristics of softness, absorbency, and drape. The decorative attributes comprise embossed patterns of indicia displaying a high quality cloth-like appearance for a softer, more quilted look. The plies are joined in a face-to-face arrangement by selective bonds which are limited to the indicia, in order to produce more permanent decorative figures that inhibit dissipation caused by compressive forces, humidity, absorption, etc.
Abstract:
A module for a web-processing machine includes a sub-frame to which are mounted an operating roll (such as a die roll), and means urging the operating roll in one direction. The sub-frame can assume a position in which the operating roll is juxtaposed against and parallel with a driven anvil roll, and a further position in which the sub-frame is released, allowing the operating roll to move away from the anvil roll, so that the operating roll can be quickly and easily removed for replacement or maintenance. Preferably, the sub-frame is hingedly connected to the machine for rotation between the above positions.
Abstract:
The web embossing machine of the present invention has two embossing cylinders brought close to one another for combining two paper webs by the pressure contact between mutually corresponding protrusions on the two cylindrical surfaces. The protrusions are in rows which present a pattern inclined relative to the axes of the respective cylindrical surfaces, i.e., in a helicoidal fashion and relative to a plane passing at right angle through said axes, and thus achieve a subsequent and progressive contact instead of a simultaneous contact throughout the row. The inclination relative to a plane passing at right angle through the cylinder axis avoids repetitive pressure actions on the pressure rollers cooperating with the embossing cylinders.
Abstract:
A patterned marrying roll especially adapted to combined multiple plies of a tissue sheet at a nip between the marrying roll and an embossing roll. The marrying roll is provided with a pattern of raised laminating elements covering a predetermined percentage of the marrying roll surface which are caused to bear against the raised embossing elements of an embossing roll with the plies of a pillowed tissue sheet therebetween. The pattern of raised elements on the marrying roll surface may be in the form of dots, a recticular grid pattern, or any other pattern of choice. The pattern is preferably aligned at an angle to the machine direction to eliminate bunching or puckering of the tissue sheet between pattern elements. The pattern on the marrying roll may comprise from approximately 10% to approximately 40% of the marrying roll surface. The invention is intended primarily for use in laminating plies of a "pillowed" cellulose sheet together, but may also be advantageously used in the lamination of "nested" sheet plies.

Uniform embossing on both sides of a web of paper may be obtained in a single pass through an embossing nip by interposing a thin film of tough, resilient material in the form of a continuous belt of approximately 0.050 inch thickness or less between the embossing roll and the backup roll. Stationary guide members, which may be combined with air bearings, are provided to insure proper tracking of the belt.

A system for treating paper webs and the like including a platen roller and a plurality of support rollers angularly spaced thereabout. At least one of the support rollers is an embossing roller cooperative with the platen roller to emboss a web advanced between the facing juxtaposed surfaces of the platen and embossing rollers. The platen roller is floatingly confined by the support rollers and has no rigidly fixed axis of rotation. Such platen roller is also hollow, including a cylindrical wall component defining a gaseous fluid pressurized chamber. The cylindrical wall component of the roller is of resilient construction and is inwardly depressible by the support rollers against the force of the gaseous pressure fluid acting outwardly thereagainst within the pressurized chamber. The web material to be treated is passed through the nips defined by one or more support rollers, including at least one embossment roller, and the platen roller. While passing through and between said nips the web material is continuously supported over substantially the entire surface area along one side thereof without application thereto of tensile stress of a magnitude tending to tear the same. Besides treating the web material to provide an embossed appearance thereto the system otherwise treats it to provide for increased absorbency, softness and apparent bulk.

Abstract:
A roll-type embossing machine in which a pair of material processing rolls are supported on a machine frame. One of the rolls is movable relative to the other and relative to the machine frame by a hydraulic-pneumatic power lift device connected to opposite ends of the movable roll supporting shaft. The other roll is fixed in relation to the machine frame and is provided with an engraved material processing sleeve which can be readily removed and replaced on the machine by means of a swingable bearing support means connected to the roll shaft at one end of the roll and a support bracket or fixture attached to the machine frame adjacent the opposite end of the fixed roll and positioned in close proximity to the roll shaft.
