Abstract: In a process for removing carbonate from and softening water in which the water passes in series, first through a cation-exchange material having a preponderance of weakly acidic groups and charged with exchangeable hydrogen ions and then through a cation-exchange material having a preponderance of strongly acidic groups and charged with sodium ions, a fraction of the water by-passes the first cation-exchange material and passes direct to the second cation-exchange material. The volume of the fraction may be controlled automatically or manually. The hydrogen ion-exchange material may be a polymer of acrylic acid cross-linked with divinyl benzene, and the sodium ion-exchange material, a sulphonated polymer of styrene cross-linked with divinyl benzene.

Abstract: Water-insoluble artificial aldehyde resins containing a sulphonic acid group or groups are manufactured by condensing an aromatic compound, containing at least one sulphonic acid group and having a tendency to condense, with an aldehyde or agent yielding it, or by treating an artificial aldehyde resin with a sulphonating agent. In examples: (1) phenol-p-sulphonic acid is condensed with formaldehyde; (2) phenol is sulphonated and the product is condensed with formaldehyde; (3) naphthalene is sulphonated and the product is condensed with formaldehyde; (4) a resin made by condensing m-phenylenediamine with formaldehyde is sulphonated with fuming sulphuric acid.ALSO:Cation exchange is effected in aqueous solutions by passing the solution through a water-insoluble artificial aldehyde resin (i.e. a resin prepared from aromatic compounds and aldehydes) containing a sulphonic acid group or groups, preferably one having a large internal surface and a granular structure. Regeneration may be effected by means of suitable acids or salt solutions. The resins may be prepared by condensing an aromatic compound, containing at least one sulphonic acid group and having a tendency to condense, with an aldehyde or agent yielding it, or by treating an artificial aldehyde resin with a sulphonating agent. In examples: (1) phenol-p-sulphonic acid is condensed with formaldehyde; the product may be used for extracting calcium chloride from solution, and regenerated with acid or common salt solution; (2) phenol is sulphonated and the product condensed with formaldehyde, yielding a product similar in properties to that of (1); (3) naphthalene is sulphonated and the product is condensed with formaldehyde; the product absorbs calcium and copper from solution; (4) a resin made by condensing m-phenylenediamine hydrochloride with formaldehyde is sulphonated with fuming sulphuric acid; the product absorbs copper from a dilute ammoniacal copper solution, e.g. the waste liquor from a copper artificial silk factory.

This method comprising the steps of: contacting cultivation water with a cation exchange resin configured to capture at least sodium ions, resulting in an effluent C; contacting an aqueous solution S with the cation exchange resin to remove sodium ions from the cation exchange resin, resulting in an effluent S comprising sodium ions, the aqueous solution S comprising cations not being sodium ions and anions soluble in water with the cations; discharging the effluent S; contacting an aqueous solution R with the cation exchange resin to regenerate the cation exchange resin, resulting in an effluent R, the aqueous solution R comprising an acid; and recirculating at least one of the effluent C and the effluent R for use for plants. Further, an apparatus suitable for implementing said method is presented as well as a cultivation system for plants comprising said apparatus.
