Abstract:
Integrated spectroscopy systems are disclosed. In some examples, integrated tunable detectors, using one or multiple Fabry-Perot tunable filters, are provided. Other examples use integrated tunable sources. The tunable source combines one or multiple diodes, such as superluminescent light emitting diodes (SLED), and a Fabry Perot tunable filter or etalon. The advantages associated with the use of the tunable etalon are that it can be small, relatively low power consumption device. For example, newer microelectrical mechanical system (MEMS) implementations of these devices make them the size of a chip. This increases their robustness and also their performance. In some examples, an isolator, amplifier, and/or reference system is further provided integrated.
Abstract:
A scanning optical monitoring system and method are appropriate for high speed scanning of a WDM signal band. The system and method are able to identify dropped channels or, more generally, discrepancies between the determined or detected channel inventory and a perpetual inventory for the WDM signal, which perpetual inventory specifies the channels that should be present in the WDM signal assuming proper operation of the network. The system includes a tunable optical filter (110) that scans a pass band across a signal band of a WDM signal (10) to generate a filtered signal (114). A photodetector (116) then generates an electrical signal (118) in response to this filtered signal. A decision circuit (130) compares the electrical signal to a threshold and a controller (150), which is responsive to the decision circuit, inventories the channels in the WDM signal (10).
Abstract:
An optical membrane device (110) and method for making such a device (110) are described. This membrane is notable in that it comprises an optically curved surface (250). In some embodiments, this curved optical surface (250) is optically concave and coated, for example, with a highly reflecting (HR) coating to create a curved mirror. In other embodiments, the optical surface is optically convex and coated with, preferably, an antireflective (AR) coating to function as a refractive or diffractive lens.
Abstract:
An optical spectrum analyzer includes an integrated beam switch array (136). As a result, a single spectrum detector (138) can be amortized across multiple optical links with pigtails (110) transmitting the optical signals from separate optical links. The switch array (136) provides one of the optical signals as an input signal to the optical spectrum detector (138).
Abstract:
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) probe and system designs are disclosed that minimize the effects of mechanical movement and strain to the probe to the OCT analysis. It also concerns optical designs that are robust against noise from the OCT laser source. Also integrated OCT system-probes are included that yield compact and robust electro-opto-mechanical systems along with polarization sensitive OCT systems.
Abstract:
An optical detector system comprises a hermetic optoelectronic package, an optical bench installed within the optoelectronic package, a balanced detector system installed on the optical bench. The balanced detector system includes at least two optical detectors that receive interference signals. An electronic amplifier system installed within the optoelectronic package amplifies an output of at least two optical detectors. Also disclosed is an integrated optical coherence tomography system. Embodiments are provided in which the amplifiers, typically transimpedance amplifiers, are closely integrated with the optical detectors that detect the interference signals from the interferometer. Further embodiments are provided in which the interferometer but also preferably its detectors are integrated together on a common optical bench. Systems that have little or no optical fiber can thus be implemented.

Abstract:
An alignment structure (100) maintains an optical fiber in a bore (113). The structure is fixed on a bench and is passively or actively aligned with a light source. Then the structure may be welded or soldered to the optical bench whereby the alignment may suffer due to heat transfer. To correct this, the alignment structure can be plastically deformed to correct the alignment after the components have been fixed. The alignment structure has a substantially constant cross section in a z-axis direction as well as flexible links in order to allow displacements orthogonal to the optical axis. This movements will be initiated by seizing the component with a micro-positioner at a handle (136) and displacing it over the elastic limit to achieve permanent deformation.
Abstract:
A system and process for tuning the polarisation extinction ratio (PER) of an optoelectronic system during and/or after its manufacture includes fixtures (104) that allow for the axial rotation of the polarization-maintaining optical fiber (106) relative to the optical system after the optical fiber has been installed in the system. This allows compensation due to the degradation in the PER ratio of the optical systems that results from mechanical stresses placed on the fiber (106) during the manufacture of the systems or misalignment between the fiber (106) and chip axes.
