    Abstract: A frequency hopping generator comprises an XOR processing module and a PERM (permutation) processing module arranged in series. The XOR and PERM modules act directly on input clock lines as a function of a selection address. The hopping number sequence generated by the frequency hopping generator can be changed in real-time by changing the selection addresses, while the phase of the sequence can be changed in real-time by changing the clock value on the clock lines. The frequency generator finds exemplary use in rapidly switching between different piconets in a wireless scatter network.

    Abstract: A first wireless unit engages in contemporaneous participation in a plurality of wireless networks. A connection is established with a second wireless unit in a first wireless network. Then, a hold time-out period is determined, and the first wireless unit enters a hold mode with respect to the first wireless network. While in hold mode, the first wireless unit establishes a connection with a third wireless unit in a second wireless network. This may include the first wireless unit paging the third wireless unit and acting as a master unit in the second wireless network. Alternatively, the first wireless unit may periodically listen for paging messages from a master unit, and respond when paged, thereby becoming a slave in the second wireless network. The first wireless unit then participates in activities in the second wireless network. Upon expiration of the hold time-out period, the first wireless unit resumes active participation in the first wireless network. This may include determining a second hold time-out period to be used in connection with the second wireless network, and entering a hold mode with respect to the second wireless network.

    Abstract: Establishing a connection between a paging unit and a standby unit in a channel hopping communications system includes activating the standby unit for an activation time period out of every standby time period. During each activation time period, the standby unit monitors a selected channel for receipt of a paging message. The selected channel is selected from a plurality of channels, and, for each subsequent activation time period, the selected channel is a subsequent one of the plurality of channels as specified by a hopping sequence and an internal clock. A page train is repeatedly transmitted from the paging unit to the standby unit, until a response is received from the standby unit. Each page train includes a plurality of paging messages, each paging message being transmitted on a different one of a subset of the plurality of channels. Selection of a page train for transmission by the paging unit may be based on an estimate of the standby unit's internal clock.

    Abstract: A demodulator circuit for demodulating a frequency modulated input signal comprises filter means (10) and detector means (14) for receiving a frequency modulated input signal and for providing a demodulated output signal, tuning means (19) for tuning the frequency characteristics of the filter means and of the detector means, and DC offset estimator means (18) which are operable to estimate the DC offset of the demodulated output signal, and to produce an offset signal representing the estimated DC offset, and to provide the offset signal to the tuning means. The tuning means are operable to tune the frequency characteristics of the filter means and detector means in dependence upon the offset signal. The demodulator circuit may be part of an analog or digital radio receiver.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and arrangement in an ad-hoc network for synchronizing a multiple of radio transceiver arrangements with different characteristics that make use of a common air interface. Each transceiver arrangement comprises at least two transceivers which mutually communicate via a radio transmission link. All transceivers synchronize to a common synchronization signal comprising two staggered beacon pulse series signals (TX1, TX2) which have the same repetition rate. The transceivers synchronize their internal timers which control the signal transmission from the transceivers, to the strongest one of the two beacon pulse series signals (TX1, TX2) by listening during one of the corresponding sets of time windows (RX1, RX2). Between the reception of two beacon pulses, each transceiver transmits beacon pulses itself, thus contributing to the generation of the other beacon pulse series signal, on which other transceivers can lock.
