Abstract:
The invention relates to a method for manufacturing a sheet of paper tissue which is embossed by an embossing cylinder of which the surface is fitted at least in part with embossing elements. The elements include a frustoconical base portion and a tip portion. The method is characterized in that the tip segment includes a flat of which the area is less than 75% of the smaller cross-sectional area of the base. Preferably the area of the flat is less than 20% of the base cross-sectional area. The invention furthermore concerns a sheet thusly manufactured and to sheets made of several plies of which at least one is a ply of the invention.
Abstract:
An embossing roll includes a roll body and a plurality of plates which are removably secured to the roll body. Each plate includes an outer surface which is provided with an embossing pattern. The plates can be secured to the roll body by vacuum and/or mechanical devices.
Abstract:
The invention relates to apparatus clamping at least one paper or non-woven sheet and including two cylinders which run substantially tangent to one another. At least one of the cylinders has on its surface and in a zone that makes contact with the sheet a clamping band having first salient elements. The interaction of the two cylinders in the presence or absence of the sheet subtends an active surface during the rotation of the cylinders. In the invention, at least one of the cylinders has on its surface and in a zone (nip) that makes contact with the other cylinder by means or not of the sheet a load compensating band having second salient elements. This band is selected so that the variation of the consecutive instantaneous active surfaces of the clamping band and of the load compensating band is less than the variation of the consecutive instantaneous active surfaces of the clamping band alone. The invention applies in particular to converting paper or non-woven sheets in the manufacture of absorbent paper items, such as tissues or table napkins.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a sheet of paper which includes at least one decorative pattern (14, 16) which contrasts visually against the sheet's background (12) and which has a first series of generally truncated protrusions (22) projecting from one side (13) of the sheet and aligned in a design. In the invention, the sheet (10) includes a second series of protrusions associated with the first series (22) and of which each protrusion assumes the approximate form of a low wall projecting from a side (13) of the sheet and having a height which is less than the height of the protrusions (22) of the first series and of which each (24) bridges the two adjacent protrusions (22) of the first series to enhance the visual perception of the decorative unit (14, 16).
Abstract:
A novel paper article, a method of making a paper product, and an embossing roll are disclosed for providing a paper surface region having a minority of fiber to fiber bonds broken in the paper surface region to a depth less than about 0.02 mm from the paper surface. In one aspect, the roughened embossing roll includes protuberances or depressions sized at less than about 0.1 mm. In one aspect, the roughened embossing roll includes protuberances or depressions adapted to produce paper product surface deformations in the paper surface, wherein the paper product surface deformations are invisible to an unaided human eye. The present invention provides a paper product having higher perceived softness while maintaining tensile strength.
Abstract:
A system for embossing a substantially continuous web of material including a supply for supplying at least one substantially continuous web of material, feeding the substantially continuous web of material, an embossing device for embossing a predetermined pattern in the web material and a takeup device for taking-up the embossed web material; wherein at least one roll of the system includes an elongated core formed of a substantially rigid material and an elongated sleeve formed of a material less rigid than the elongated core with the elongated sleeve being releasably secured to the core such that the elongated sleeve is axially and circumferentially fixed with respect to the core when in operation and can be selectively axially removed from the core. Preferably, the sleeve includes an embossing pattern laser engraved thereon so as to permit the embossing pattern being run by the system to be readily changed.
Abstract:
High bulk tissue webs are processed sequentially through separate calendering and embossing units to optimize the balance between sheet caliper for winding tension and embossing element height for pattern definition, resulting in embossed, high-bulk tissue products with improved embossing pattern clarity. The multiple step converting process enables the use of male embossing elements having a height of about 0.04 inch or greater. The tissue webs have a Residual Waviness value of 12 micrometers or greater, which is attributable to average surface waviness values for the spot embossments being about 30 micrometers or greater.
Abstract:
The perceived softness of embossed tissue can be increased greatly while avoiding nesting when a particular pattern is embossed into the tissue. This pattern combines relatively shallow stitchlike bosses with deeper more sharply defined signature bosses. The stitchlike bosses can be rounded and arranged in wavy flowing intersecting lines. The signature bosses can be arranged in regions framed by the intersecting wavy flowing lines.

Abstract:
An embossed tissue having improved bulk and puffiness while being non-nesting by having a lattice pattern and at least two signature bosses. More particularly, one of the signature bosses is defined by embossments having a lower portion which is continuous and an upper portion which is defined by crenels and merlons.
