The invention relates to a hopper (1) for smoking articles (S), comprising: an inlet portion (10), for the inlet of smoking articles (S) into the hopper (1); and at least a first exiting group (Gl) comprising at least two first exiting mouths (Bl, B2, B3), each first exiting mouth (Bl, B2, B3) having a plurality of ducts (V) for allowing the exit of the smoking articles (S) from the hopper (1); and at least a second exiting group (G2) which is flanked to the first exiting group (Gl) and which comprises at least two second exiting mouths (B4, B5, B6), each second exiting mouth (B4, B5, B6) having a plurality of ducts (V) for allowing the exit of the smoking articles (S) from the hopper (1). In particular, the hopper (1) comprises: a first connection channel (2), which exclusively connects the inlet portion (10) to the first exiting group (Gl) so as to exclusively supply the first exiting group (Gl) with smoking articles (S); and a second connection channel (3), which is separate from the first connection channel (2) and exclusively connects the inlet portion (10) to the second exiting group (G2) so as to exclusively supply the second exiting group (G2) with the smoking articles (S).

A transportation system for use in a unit for making filters for smoking articles comprises a reservoir (1) for holding a plurality of solid objects. The reservoir (1) has an outlet (6) for the discharge of the solid objects from the reservoir (1), and a transportation duct (2) for transporting the solid objects discharged from the reservoir (1) to an object receiving unit. The transportation system further comprises a gas supply for providing a gas stream through the transportation duct (2), a Venturi nozzle (4) arranged in the transportation duct (2) and a release mechanism (9) arranged downstream of the Venturi nozzle(4). The Venturi nozzle (4) is in communication with the outlet (6) of the reservoir (1), such that upon operation of the gas supply solid objects are drawn from the outlet (6) of the reservoir (1) through the Venturi nozzle (4) into the transportation duct (2). The release mechanism (9) is provided for releasing pressure from the transportation duct (2).

A cigarette packer (1) incorporates a station at which cigarettes (2) are formed into groups (12) and from which the groups (12) are advanced by a first conveyor (13) along a first feed path (P) toward a wrapping station (16). A first inspection device (24) located along the first feed path (P) detects initially whether or not there are any defective cigarettes (2) in each group (12), and a second inspection device (45) located along a second conveyor (30) then identifies the single defective cigarettes (2) detected by the first device (24); the second inspection device (45) operates in conjunction with a rejection unit (46) by which defective cigarettes (2) are removed from the second conveyor (30).

Article wrapping apparatus for wrapping or folding a wrapper blank around an article which may comprise or contain a group of rod-like articles such as cigarettes, includes a wrapper blank former which simultaneously folds sides and ends of a blank (60) by plunging the former (64) around an article holder (58) and subsequently plunging the article from the holder into the former. The apparatus also includes a housing (24) for supporting a partially-wrapped article which is pivoted relative to an abutment (32) so that a flap is swept into a closed position; and pivoted holders (24, 54) which are used to transfer articles between axially-spaced process positions on a process drum (6). Folding operations may be performed during transfer to or from a pivotable holder (24, 54), particularly in a radial direction of the drum (6).

An apparatus (10, 20, 30, 40) for shifting of rod-like articles (4, 4') with different lengths or rod-like article groups (6) with different total lengths on a drum conveyor (3), comprising slidably mounted pusher elements (7, 27, 37) acting on at least one rod-like article (4, 4') or at least one rod-like article group (6) so as to vary their position in the flute (3) of the drum conveyor (2), with the pusher elements (7, 27, 37) being 5 slidable in a direction substantially corresponding to the axis of the rod-like articles, and a pushing unit (5, 25, 35) mounted angularly relative to the pusher elements (7, 27, 37) forcing the movement of the pusher elements (7, 27, 37), whereas the pushing unit comprises rotational pushing elements for pushing against the pusher elements (7, 27, 37). The apparatus is characterised in that the pushing unit (5, 25, 35) is moveably mounted in a direction being substantially transverse to the axis of the flute (3) of the drum 10 conveyor (2) so as to shift the rod-like articles (4, 4') or the rod-like article groups (6) inside the flute (3) of the drum conveyor (2).
